“I’m fine, everything’s fine,” Rolan says, a corner of his mouth twitching into a frown. Eleazar’s mouth does, too, looking the wizard in the eyes as he says it. He’s sure that he’s accidentally pulling his puppy eyes, because Rolan scoffs at him and says, “Don’t look at me like that, Eleazar.” It does get Rolan to smile, though, which is a win in Eleazar’s books.
“If something is stressing you out, Rolan, I am able to talk. It’s technically my off day, so I don’t necessarily have anywhere to be,” Eleazar says, deciding he’ll simply write down who he was with in the logbook later. One of his friends— and crush, although Eleazar quickly pushed that thought out of his mind— wasn’t feeling well, and that was more important, obviously.

Astarion and Tav had similar questions, but Halsin was already kneeling beside the bleeding body, rolling it over gently. The man groaned brokenly at his careful touch, blood and froth spilling from his cracked lips as they parted.
“Ohhhh, gods,” their visitor grimaced, spitting out a molar and trying weakly to sit up. He failed painfully, with a tiny flail and a gasping twitch. Something—or, more likely, some things—were broken in his right side and he crumpled over with a gasp.
“Fuck,” Astarion gasped in shock, crouching beside him and tipping the swollen face towards the light. “That’s–”

“The wizard’s magic exploded.” Lae-zel shifted her weight, still watching the vampire and arch-druid worriedly. “Astarion?”
Astarion shook his head despairingly, tears choking the words from his throat.
“I’m so sorry.” Gale came near hesitantly. “It… the spell deflected like there was nothing there to bring back. I… I don’t know what else to try. I’m sorry, Astarion. I’m so sorry.”
Astarion sobbed miserably, clutching Halsin’s head closer and pressing his cold lips to the still-warm forehead. He had no words, no ideas, no plans. No concept of what to do now or where to go next.
Behind him, Karlach gasped breathlessly, the tiniest sound of hope.
