Zuko blinks into the dim light of a dying campfire and tries to remember how to breathe.
He knows what happened; the sensations are familiar and the asphyxiation isn’t new. He’s braved lightning before, just never of his own volition before. This time he chose to do it, and…
And, it’s only cemented how much he never wants to do it again.
Zuko… still feels nothing. Except, maybe disgust; it’s a disgusting thing to vocalize, the story behind the scar. From any point of view, it’s disgusting. It was a disgusting injury for a disgusting cause upheld by a disgusting person.
“How long do hugs usually last?”
“As long as you need them to. And you kinda seemed like you needed a long one.”
“How’re you feeling?”
“How hard would it be for you to launch me into the sun?”
Aang tilts his head. “Uh, not hard. Why?”
“Because I will pay you to launch me into the sun.”
Toph’s hand shoots in the air. “I’ll do it for free!”
“I didn’t think I had another choice,” Zuko says, “and I’ve redirected lightning before, so I sort of knew what to expect.” It hadn’t prepared him for the excruciation, but they don’t have to know that. “The day of black sun, I confronted my father on my decision to join you, and he used lightning to try and kill me.”
“Your father did what?” Toph’s voice reminds him of an earthquake, rattled and still rattling, strong enough to topple cities. “He tried to—with lightning?”
Katara is looking at him as though for the first time. Aang’s face is wan. This is why Zuko didn’t tell them about the scar. He gulps down whatever it was creeping up his throat.
“My father isn’t exactly a good person,” he says. “I thought everyone knew that.”
“You didn’t say he tried to fill you with lightning!” Sokka strains, reeling back. “Is that why your body freaked out on you so much after you bent it?”
Zuko blinks. “... Now that you mention it, probably.” It’s hard to tell the difference between gut-reaction and trauma these days, but it’d make sense. “I’m not sure.”

Summary
Zuko doesn’t know exactly how he got here.
But when a Spirit grabs you by the arm, dances a waltz with you, reveals your past and future to the Avatar, and shows you getting shot with lightning, you don't ask questions. You just get on the flying bison and embrace a new destiny in an attempt to save yourself and your estranged sister from the monster haunting your home.
Especially when there are only two known lightningbenders left in the world, and the Spirit revealed that both of them are traitors waiting for their chance to strike.
Or: the author has let the Epic brainworms get to them, and Zuko is the one who has to deal with it.
Featuring: Zuko trading his non-existent impulse control for some new friends, an over-protective Gaang who is very okay with that decision, a baffled Azula who isn't exactly going to say no to the older brother that wants to clear a path for her to take the throne, and a confused Iroh who just wants to know what he did to get slotted into the same category as Ozai.

Sokka is a practical kind of guy. Reasonable. Science-minded. A connoisseur of facts. This makes traveling with the Avatar and his prodigy baby sister on a quest to save the world one wacky adventure at a time... a little stressful. He could do with a day off. But hey, they're his family now, and he's prepared to go through whatever he has to to keep them safe. He's less prepared to be saddled with the care of his worst enemy. Even if the kid is more quiet and adorably determined than scary when he stops being angry. Even if he's careful with his bending around them and sounds desperately sad whimpering in his sleep. Even if he only knows who they are sometimes, and the rest of the time he's shy and sweet and gentle in a completely not-Zuko kind of way. They're breaking this Spirit curse and sending him back. They are not keeping him. Sokka is putting his foot down, and not allowing anyone to get attached.

The Gaang want to be rid of Zuko, return balance to the world, and stop the war. Zuko wants to drag the Avatar back to his abusive father, and continues to get in the way of returning balance. A 'helpful' Spirit sees a simple solution to these problems.Series

Summary
He survived two-and-a-half years as General Fong’s training dummy, months as Zhao’s prisoner, and weeks as a captive aboard the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe’s ship, all the while refusing to let his father’s cold, firelit eyes be the last he saw of the man. There was no way these children would keep him from going home.
"Yes," Zuko lied. 'I’ll help you defeat my father."
Or: After three years of imprisonment, Zuko escapes, just in time to arrive at the climax of the Invasion of Ba Sing Se. From there, he travels with the Avatar's team - first as a political prisoner and then, maybe (and indignantly), as Aang's firebending teacher.
(Zuko wonders why Agni let him suffer in the cold for so many years only to make him the Avatar's mentor. Destiny is a cruel, complicated thing. It takes him a while to figure out his.)

Summary
100 years ago, Fire Lord Sozin lead the Fire Nation into war against the other three nations, completely wiping the Air Nomads off the map and turning his sights to the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom. The Avatar, the sole person responsible for the peace of the world, vanished around this time and hasn't been seen since, and many have begun to lose hope that he even still exists.
Aang was never the Avatar. His twin sister, Anya, was saved at birth because she was the Avatar's next incarnation. Now, a hundred years have passed and as the last Airbender, it's his jobs to teach the current Avatar airbending...whoever that may be.
For three years, Zuko has searched for the Avatar at the behest of his father, along with the promise to have his honor returned to him. Desperate, Zuko has put every once of his being into this search, and now his luck seems to be turning around. An airbender - the last in the entire world - has been sighted in the Southern Water Tribe, and Zuko just knows that he knows where the Avatar is - if the nomad isn't the Avatar himself.

Mai loves Zuko and will always fight for him even when he doesn't want her to, especially when he won't fight for himself. Mai plans to kill Ozai, she doesn't know how, when or if she can she just knows she needs to kill the bastard that hurt Zuko, maybe even punch Azula for extra measure because she's being a bitch.
Zuko loves Mai, he will live for her when he couldn't live for himself he lived for her, to see her. He just wished she'd stop being so over-protective and let them fight together.
