Like an arrow, like a bullet, an epiphany that would alter the course of his life forever, Lu Guang was struck with the realisation that he could not shelter Cheng Xiaoshi here in this world forever. That to shield Cheng Xiaoshi from his future death would be to bar him from growing up and learning that he would be loved and cherished, that he could have a family again. In this world, Cheng Xiaoshi would not grow to learn how much Qiao Ling protected him, or meet the friends who would shed tears for him at his funeral, or play basketball with Lu Guang–his Lu Guang, who would do anything to have just a little more time with him. He would never receive the joyful gift of being proven wrong.
Lu Guang gasped with pain as conviction pried his heart open. I love you, he wanted to say. I love you and I want to keep you, and it will only hurt you if I do. There was a worse death than the death of the body. He loved Cheng Xiaoshi, so he must let him go. It was so hard to let him go
Oh my god talk about a fic that spiritually had me spiritually curled up in a ball and ugly crying in a corner. A gorgeous exploration of grief and love and emotional catharsis. I tear up just thinking about it

She stood quietly with a searching gaze as he continued working; like she was trying to read the words that Lu Guang wouldn’t say. He had just picked up a spray bottle and misted the glass when her eyes widened and she whispered, “How many times?”
“Enough.”
After things settled down for the three, Qiao Ling confronts Lu Guang about the memories she witnessed.

There’s nothing wrong with how Cheng Xiaoshi chooses to display his affection, really, it’s just that Lu Guang is overwhelmed and also a little terrified by the mere intensity of it. Qiao Ling doesn’t even seem to notice that anything’s changed, so maybe he’s the one being weird about it at all.
Or: Cheng Xiaoshi is showing symptoms of being in love and Lu Guang doesn’t know what to do with himself.

Lu Guang likes peace and quiet, especially when he’s reading. Cheng Xiaoshi doesn’t always know when to be quiet, particularly when Lu Guang isn’t doing much to fill the silence.
And yet, though he might never admit it, Lu Guang doesn’t mind too much when Cheng Xiaoshi talks and talks. It fills the silence. So, sometimes, when Cheng Xiaoshi is already asleep (he’s quick to fall asleep and hard to wake up), Lu Guang retreats to the sunroom to try to fall asleep.
