Summary
After a job gone sideways in Russia, Eliot and Parker end up in an overcrowded prison.
It was a cruel place, not designed for the long-term survival of the prisoners, but only to stash them away. The cells were overcrowded, bitterly cold, and filthy. The guards were underpaid and sadistic. Eliot had thought he’d left places like this far behind, but now he wasn’t just back in hell - no, he’d dragged Parker into it, too.

After Parker goes down, Eliot sees red. Goes somewhere he doesn’t like to go, shadowy corners in the deep recesses of his mind, the place where “knowledge of guns” sits next to “how to rip out a heart through the chest cavity.” He’s armed but doesn’t remember picking up a weapon; seven-eight-ten-twelve thugs rush him and there’s two for every one he topples, but Eliot doesn’t feel pain, he just feels impact.
They hurt Parker. People who hurt Parker die.

The first person that Eliot kills since joining Nate Ford’s crew is the Butcher of Kiev. Not accidentally with an appetizer like Nate thinks, but instead with a snapped neck in front of his own men, and a threat of the same happening to them if they told a soul where he was.
There is a reason that Eliot killed the Butcher, and it has nothing to do with Kiev. No, instead it has to do with the connections the Butcher had. Eliot killed the Butcher of Kiev because he doesn’t want to be found. And he doesn’t want to be found because he’s on the run from Damien Moreau.

Summary
His job is protection now. It’s no longer retrieval, or killing, but instead protecting. A hitter. He doesn’t think the team realizes the extent of that until after Moreau. Because to them, protecting only means stopping the hits, but to Eliot it means so much more. To Eliot it means hiding them from all danger, not letting them know how dangerous a situation is, because he has it handled. His job is to give them faith that they can do their jobs unharmed.
His job doesn’t include letting them worry about him.

Right as he decides he'll talk to his friend, they get an email about a new job, and the conversation is delayed. Possibly forever, as this monster seems to be stronger than the others they've faced before.
Chester thinks he's made peace with losing life and limb while on this job as long as he's with Parker, but when he faces the cold reality of what that might mean, he finds he's less willing to stick around the danger than he thought.
