I blink them away before they have the chance to do something embarrassing like fall.

I don’t look up at him, too afraid that he’ll be able to read the rare moment of vulnerability and really see me. See the parts of me that aren’t made of hardened stone. The parts that can watch two people so clearly in love and think about how nice it must be.
I stare stubbornly ahead at my best friend and the love of her life and try not to let myself be too envious of that bond they share while I deny myself the chance at anything close to it. “Still,” I mutter, “thank you. Quinn really needed this.”
