Summary
The weather reminds him of Rio, back when he was little, living with his mother and spending his days at the beach. He’d run through the winding streets as she yelled at him to wait up. Then, as soon as his feet hit the sand he’d drop everything, including all of his mother’s warnings, and plunge into the water. He’d splash and swim and collect seashells and catch crabs in the net and get his fingers pinched for his efforts, then run to his mother for snacks and sun-warmth. On days like those, the sun was saffron yellow, and he was dry before the sting from the crabs’ pincers went away.
He can almost smell the breeze on the Scottish mountain air.(Snapshots of Gordon and Warren at Red Valley in 2064. No plot just doing laundry.)

It’s not exactly that Warren Godby could not die. He was, in fact, rather good at dying. He enjoyed it even – though that didn’t sound very healthy, and so he preferred not to think about it too often.
But the fact was that dying wasn’t all that bad. When he tried to put it into words (which was, by definition, impossible), he said it was like the end of a long summer day. The first breeze of cool air that brings promises of night, promises of peace, promises of an ending.
So no, dying wasn’t a problem for Warren, but staying dead was.

Warren dies a lot but never for long, and Gordon is the socially incompetent Grim Reaper assigned to take his soul. Shenanigans ensue.

In which the Red Valley project doesn't go as planned, and Warren doesn't show up on his own free will. Instead, he realizes the state of his "relationship" with Karen while visiting his father's grave and moves in with Emily as an attempt to start a divorce. Overhead does not take that lying down, and this time, Emily and Gordon both have to be taken to Red Valley to accompany Warren into cryosleep.
