Summary
Five years after the defeat of Calamity Ganon, Hyrule is flourishing. The kingdoms are in harmony and work seamlessly together to ensure any potential threats will never rise again. Peace at last blankets the land.
But at the yearly celebratory banquet, Sidon can't help but notice Link isn't flourishing as everyone else is, and he knows that if someone doesn't do something about it, the Hero of Hyrule might not last. Yet despite Link's stubborn attitude and self-destructive tendencies, Sidon believes he can give Link what he needs to truly live again.
So long as Sidon keeps the beast lurking within himself under control.

If that was the only thing you were ever told, I wonder, then, if you would have chosen a different path."
Link gave a wry grimace at the princess's words, thoughts bitter and resigned, because what she didn't know was that he had already /tried/. Link had already done all he possibly could to escape his role as the chosen "Hero of Hyrule". He had never wanted this, despite what the Princess may think, and never had a choice in the matter.
Just like before, his fate had been decided for him.
And just like before, he was forced to do what no one else would, what no one else /could/. Time and time again.
He would do it, not because he particularly wanted to, but because he needed to for those he cared about and because he had no other choice... And when all was said and done, he would mount the sword like the over-glorified display piece it was and retire somewhere in the Lanayru mountains as some crazy old hermit. Maybe he'd end up herding cattle or something.
