Summary
He tried to focus on the last thing he remembered. It all flooded back to him; returning to his family, the fire the fire the fire—, leaving the island, and drowning... except he wasn't dead. No dead person would be wherever he was, would feel his body ache like he did. Which means he was alive.
For how long, though, is a good question.
AU where instead of being saved by the Revolutionaries, Sabo gets fished out by the Celestial Dragon that shot him down and turned into a slave. Ace and Luffy think he is dead for a very long time, and Sabo wishes he was more than once.

Sabo didn't fully consider the implications of what it means to become a logia before eating Ace's fruit.
To become something new requires you cease to be what you were before. A man of flesh and blood and a man of flame hold fundamentally different compositions from one another.
He'd count his humanity an acceptable sacrifice for Ace's legacy any day. He just would've preferred making that sacrifice on purpose, instead of finding out after it was already far too late for second guesses.

Sabo tried to summon back the blood he could feel draining from his face, already shaking his head. There was literally no reason for Portgas D. Ace to have ever laid eyes on Lastname-blank Middlename-blank Sabo. He didn’t have any sort of wanted poster with his likeness on it yet— if he did, he was sure Koala would have gotten ahold of him somehow to let him know, even if Sabo mostly ignored her calls if he didn’t suspect they might have booty in them. “No, I don’t think so. Probably just one of those top-hats.”

When Ace runs off to confront Whitebeard without either of his brothers, any of his crew, his ship, or, for that matter, anything other than the clothes on his back, Sabo is left to play catch up before his idiot brother gets himself killed or, worse, adopted.
Hopefully, Ace is annoying enough that the Whitebeards simply give him back. Sabo certainly wishes he could do the same some days.
(Oh and Sabo and Ace share the power of the Mera Mera fruit. Somehow, this is still the least of their worries.)

Kuina baissa les yeux sur sa robe et même elle sembla surprise de la porter.
- J'étais à un mariage, expliqua-t-elle. Le mien. Mais au moment de dire oui, j'ai remis toute ma vie en question et j'ai dit non. Mon mari... non.... mon ex-mari ? Non plus, on ne s'est jamais mariés au final. Mon ex-fiancé a tellement pleuré que sa soeur a essayé de m'arracher ma robe. Au final elle n'a eu que mon voile, finit-elle en pointant ses cheveux. J'ai eu de la chance, ses ongles étaient de véritables griffes. Je suis certaine qu'elle n'aurait pas hésité à me crever les yeux et d'un côté je la comprends, j'aurais certainement fait pareil si c'était arrivé à quelqu'un de ma famille.
Elle prit une gorgée de son soda et quand elle comprit que Sabo attendait la suite, elle continua :
- Et puis j'ai eu envie de manger un burger. Donc me voilà, conclut-elle.
Sabo a vraiment un don pour attirer tous les fous du coin.

“Does it still hurt?” Luffy asks, lithe and calloused fingers barely grazing his scarred skin. They tremble, as if he’s afraid that his touch would reopen the scar long healed, that his palm would burn his skin again like it did 12 years ago.
Sabo’s mouth dries; a trembling gloved hand rises to touch where Luffy’s fingers lay. He wants to say no; it does not hurt anymore—not like how it used to. He wants to lie. But instead, he admits in a whisper, “Sometimes.”
