    "Humans are so pitiful," Douma lamented, dangling yet another luxurious offering in his long thin fingers. Toying with the hauntingly expensive pearls until they were crushed underneath his superior strength. "They live and die like the common worm, yet convince themselves that their lives have meaning."

    "Isn't that silly?"

    Inosuke, being a mere two years old and incapable of saying more than 'Douma', 'milk' and 'dada', just stared as he continued his tirade. Giggling as he watched the demon grind the pretty necklace into fine dust, before lifting his palm to smear it into the pile of broken prayers and disrespect.

    "Ah-ah-ah, Inosuke"- Douma grinned, not bothering to contain his bark of laughter at the toddler's angry pout - "Wouldn't want to get filthy, would we, my little flower?"

    Inosuke could only stick his tongue out in response.

    The memory replayed in his head again.

    A massive demon gripping Inosuke by the neck, muscled hands slowly increasing in pressure until it felt like his eyes might burst. Inosuke had clawed at the huge arms to get free, swords previously knocked out of his hands from the force of the demon’s swings. However, Inosuke’s nails did not deter the demon, the fucking thing instead looked almost fascinated by his resistance. No matter how hard he kicked and punched, it kept a tight grip on his neck, all while maintaining a disgusting yet pleased grin. He wasn’t sure if the demon’s staring was due to the sight of Inosuke’s bare face, boar head having been ripped off to taunt him, or if it was due to the darkening blue hue in his cheeks. Either way, loss of blood from the numerous gashes across his body left Inosuke numb, and upon him eventually fell the fuzziness that came from lack of oxygen. All he was aware of was the cracking pressure in his neck, and the burning in his lungs. Inosuke couldn’t tell when he had stopped fighting back, too close to suffocation to think about anything else. At some point his eyes had fallen shut, and then... nothing.

    “What’s going on with him? He hasn’t tried to fight me in weeks,” Zenitsu said, the concern clear in his voice. “Can you even remember the last time he said something?”

    “I— I don’t know,” Tanjiro admitted, both of them turning to Inosuke’s form sitting against a tree, mask over his head. 

    He approached carefully, like he was trying not to scare away a wild animal, tip-toeing until he could put his back to the tree bark and slide down next to Inosuke. 

    “You did really well today, you know,” Tanjiro said, hoping it could bring him back the Inosuke he was used to. “I saw the way you flipped off that tree while we were training, that was amazing, and you’re not even at a hundred percent yet.”

    Shockingly, Inosuke didn’t say anything back at all, just pressed his body closer to Tanjiro’s and propped his head on his shoulder. The fur of the mask was brushing against his cheek, and Tanjiro did a double take when he heard the sounds coming from inside. 

    “Oh,” He stutters with the realization. “I can grab you water or something, Ino—”

    No, but it didn't favor Muzan either. The battle was a huge loss for both sides, one more damaged than the other, of course.

    Genya wasn't hit by Kokushibo's attack and actually survived the fight; Sanemi survived but was no longer capable of continuing the fight due to major injuries; Giyu died trying to protect Nezuko from one of Muzan's final, desperate attacks.

    And Muzan himself? He survived without being punished, without paying for what he had done, without anything... Now the demon corps needs to recover to attack again, under Kiriya's command and the survivors' guidance in the fierce battle. Will they succeed this time, or will Muzan continue his reign of terror?

    “We’re all comrades here,” Tanjirou said, his voice clear and bright, like fresh water in a lake or a cloudless blue sky. “You’re like brothers to me.”

    Inosuke looked up from the onigiri he was eating, curious. He had never had a brother before, nor had anyone offered to be one for him. He listened to Tanjirou closely.

    “If anyone is about to go down the wrong path, we’ll all stop them,” Tanjirou continued. “No matter how hard or painful it is, let’s all walk down the right path, okay?”

    Inosuke nodded eagerly. Back then, he thought that it had sounded reasonable enough; if one of them strayed from the right road, then the remaining few would do everything in their power to prevent them from venturing further.

    But Inosuke had no idea how wrong he’d been. He had not known that Tanjirou would be turned into a demon, and that they would all have to continue down their respective paths— the one without Tanjirou, the future that never should have been.

    In the end, the wrong road was the one without him.
