Summary
Proud of her own working form as she was, Momma knew it wasn’t ideal, having Rusty meld with a steam engine. Control had him set to be a shunter, so he wouldn’t be traveling beyond the yard much, if at all, unless he took up racing (and he did often talk about wanting to race). But she’d still held off as long as she could - both to see if another option presented itself (a long shot), and to see how far the refurbishments to the steam engine got. It wasn’t a perfect option, and funds were tight for the yard. Some parts worked, technically, but were rusted, not yet replaced or cleaned up before it became clear that Rusty would have to meld sooner rather than later. Rusty had taken it in stride, joked that his name would suit him now.

He’d never actually seen Electra eat, come to think of it. Some engines didn’t, preferring to get by on their fuel or power source alone. It might be the same for electric components, too, for all he knew. It wasn’t a habit Momma held, and one she discouraged Rusty from, and he and the other fuel trucks needed to eat. As she liked to say, the Starlight Express gave them good food, and hungry stomachs to fill it with, and tongues to enjoy it with, so they may as well eat. Porter liked to cook, liked to see his loved ones enjoy the results of his labor, and so he was usually the one to make sure they were all fed.
Electra seemed the sort to hold themself above all that.

Months after the Troubador yard races, Hydra finds himself frustrated with his situation:
“I thought after racing with you and Rusty, maybe things would be different for myself and Hydrogen… Like other trains would wanna give it a try or I’d have more work.” He finally piped up. He’d done a few one off things with Momma since the races, but she was an older train and the weight of his tank was just too much for her. He couldn’t bring himself to put that kind of strain on her. “Everyone still wants to work with Porter, Lumber, and Slick. But no one seems interested in working with me. Well. Electra was but they and the components make me uncomfortable. They’re so weird! And Rusty has the coaches, especially Pearl-” Hydra’s mouth clamped shut and his eyes widened slightly. Thinking it had been one thing, but actually saying it out loud was another. He tried to recover but he knew Momma had caught what he just said.
And that she did. Her silent gaze on Hydra left him squirming as she decided how she wanted to proceed with that change in topic. “Oh Hydra..”

Summary
The heat map in his mind spread halfway across the yard, just enough to reach the station and its main platform. In their search for a large enough space for their elaborate shed, Electra had set them apart from the rest of the yard, whose quarters tended to be on the far side of the station. Useful in that he wasn't really spying on anyone in the privacy of their homes, only observing the goings-on as he might if he were there watching with his eyes. Less useful in that it was a disconnect between them and the rest of the yard, when so many were still a bit wary of them. That was frustrating for Killerwatt in particular, since he liked to be aware of the patterns of the others around him, and that was difficult to do when they were reluctant to spend much time around him.
