‘That isn’t fair!’ Damen complains as he emerges from the fountain and leans on the marble skirting. The water isn’t deep; it barely covers his knees when he stands up, but the impact has drenched him from head to toe.
Recovering from his mirth, Laurent says, amusement still dancing on his features, ‘Didn’t I tell you that I could wrestle you into the water?’

For six years since the battle of Marlas, the war between the two nations was at an unstable ceasefire. Damianos disappeared into the dungeons of the Veretian Palace and Akielos was held at bay by just the threat of his death. Until the Akielon king, Theomedes, succumbs to sickness and his first son, Kastor, made Regent, threatening a new effort to break Vere and retake their king.
In a political play that Laurent doesn’t yet ynderstand, Damianos is brought from the dungeons for the first time and made Laurent’s slave. An insult to Akielos Laurent knows means war.
