Sometimes, Shadow hates the fact that he exists. This is one of those times. All he wants to do is lie face-down in the sand and either cry or sleep. Probably, sleep is better to do, especially with the boys in his presence. They’re counting on him; he knows it, so he can’t be weak. He has to watch out for them both. The only issue is that both are clearly not nocturnal, and neither of them has successfully rewired their circadian rhythms to justify this existence. Which is bad if they’re going to remain undetected by humans.

Summary
Gerald shows Maria and Shadow what it looks like when Sonic is deactivated in order to teach them what to do in this situation. This encounter plants the seed in their heads about Sonic not being 'alive,' and this point comes up again when Shadow confronts Sonic about letting himself get fatally hurt merely because Sonic doesn't consider himself to be alive, either.
It is only years later when Sonic believes he's alive, but then again, it isn't like he knows the truth about what happened in the ARK.

Sonic vows to force his reluctant friend into doing things for his own enjoyment, starting with an introduction to the finest foods Green Hills has to offer. He has the best intentions, but doesn't quite know when to slow down and stop.

Bonking their head on the table, they could feel their anxiety picking up.
"Heh, you alright?"
Jerking in surprise, they lifted their head up to see their date in all his glory. His quills groomed to perfection, and sparking in the light. His eyes were a beautiful emerald that didn't seem to have an end and held so many secrets.
And his body, it may not look like it, but there was muscle. A Lot of it. He had a sleeper build, and Barry was lucky enough to feel it.
And his voice? A deep, rich voice that can soothe away all of your worries.
Barry's brain hitched to a stop, once he realized he was staring and his date was smirking with that stupid glint in his eyes again.
