    Summary

An addendum to ch. 77 "The Great Heidelburgh Tun".

It is an ironic circumstance, that men often receive the pleasures of life when they are least positioned to enjoy them; thus the Marquis de Lafayette, in the flourishing of his fortune and with an overladen table, received an abounding Nantucket cheese for lighting up the streets of Paris with whale oil, and was only inconvenienced; this was mighty bad timing; had but a crumb of that monstrous cheddar been lowered down to him in his prison-cell, that poor Frenchman would have wept! - and just the same, the fine cheese laid before Ahab at table could have been vermescent hard-tack; it penetrated him mechanically, but that inward Bastille of the heart received no provision.

And so Ahab left his fare half-tasted, and his officers under the still spell of that silent glance no more thought of eating the remnants than of seizing the sextant from him.

Ever wondered what Moby Dick is even about? Or have you read Moby Dick and want to relive the Pequod's highs and lows without trying to speak 19th century? This is a very reliable and accurate summary of Moby Dick, written like I am your best friend explaining my hyperfixation to you (because I am). Condenses 210k of Herman Melville's favorite whale facts into a very manageable 30k for your enjoyment! Also I point out all the gay stuff and interrupt myself a lot, but Melville does that anyway so it's not much different. Spoiler warning for Moby Dick, obviously.

Skin is like a canvas or the outer hull of a ship- with time and water and sun, it changes. It gains spots and scars and nicks and bruises. Dark spots and light spots gather on the warm surface, fading and growing as time passes. Needles puncture and ink soaks in.

    Summary

Years ago, an infamous white whale attacked Captain Crozier's ship and killed nearly everyone on board. The captain, overwhelmed with grief and thoughts of revenge, started hunting the creature and never stopped.
Among the survivors of that first voyage was John Bridgens, who is about to set sail again with Crozier, now a shadow of the brilliant captain John once knew. Henry Peglar, returning to his true love - the sea -, meets Bridgens in an inn the evening before the Terror, Endgland's most famous whaler, ships.

Between years of whaling, dubious shipmates, new friends, and the ever-present threat of the great white whale, some sailors might just find something, or someone, worth fighting for.

"Thou saw’st the locked lovers when leaping from their flaming ship; heart to heart they sank beneath the exulting wave; true to each other, when heaven seemed false to them"
    - Herman Melville

Just a sappy and extremely self-indulgent series of short, disconnected blurbs from a very enamored Ishmael, trying to figure out this whole "in love with my best friend" thing.

When Ishmael angsts over never having kissed his bosom friend Queequeg, the crew of the Pequod rally around his increasingly desperate efforts, serving up a cavalcade of romcom clichés in their misguided attempts to find Ishmael his happily ever after. They’re serious about putting romcom back into Romanticism—and if there ain’t no extravagant musical number sung in the shadow of a breaching whale, then by Neptune it ain’t love.

FF Bookclub week 22: Classic Lit

      this was like? Really good?
      > “You have gazed into the starry void that is my very soul.” Ishmael wiped the scratchy wool sleeve of his sweater across his brimming eyes, then sneezed. “But what can I do?”
the perfect combo of sweet and also just silly as hell

      > “Steady, Ishmael.” Queequeg seemed even more serious and focused than his typical serious, focused self.
      aww and lol 10/10

      makeover scene I love it

      > Starbuck pulled a little book out of his pocket, its cover protected by brown paper and the handwritten inscription “Starbuck’s book! Keep thine hands off!” and read
      skjdfhksdfh

      > Starbuck saluted. “Aye, sir. She was an Ess Doubleyew Two One Three Nine Shipyard Gray.”
      >
      > “Not Ess Doubleyew Seven Five Six Three Restful White? Are ye certain?”
      10/10

      > When he lifted his head, the phrase “I <3 Queequeg” was printed backwards on the top of the railing. It was like a message from Providence, and it lit his heart anew.
      this is SO good

      THE CALL ME MAYBE

      > Queequeg crouched next to Ishmael, put an arm around him, and held the mug to his lips.
      > “What’s this?”
      > “Coffee. Starbuck’s. Flat white.”

the combo of INCREDIBLE writing, little references, the historical dialogue... this is the best thing I have read in a while

"I never read the book in the first place, but now I feel like I don't have to, because it could not live up to this"

    Summary

If, as ye take this broad recounting, aught has looked odd in the culture of whalemen— indeed, should you be anything less than a salt-seasoned veteran of that most noble fishery, and particularly to that fellow among ye whose feet have never left the hard-packed soil of his native land, that veritable tree of devout landsmen from whom roots may well spring into the earth or all life exist in a bulb beneath its surface— to you most especially, it may be necessary to preface the next recounting with an explication of the whaleman’s notion of the holiday.

During the search for the leaking barrel of whale oil, a detour becomes necessary.

A light-hearted vignette inserted into the story of Moby Dick, fulfilling that fundamental human desire to give the crew of the Pequod a beach episode to relax.

Moby Dick is, at it's heart, a sitcom waiting to escape. I've heard that calling voice and have come to deliver it. Welcome to White Whale Grocery (the Pequod Street branch!) where the boss has a chaotic hold over his employees with a forty eight year grudge to sustain it, and honestly everyone only works here to pay the bills.

A series of drabbles & ficlets.

Queequeg was picked by the PPDC from a pool of thousands of candidates to be the new pilot for Pequod Prophet in the Oakland Shatterdome. The only problem is that he can't seem to find a single person to drift with and time is running out. And that’s not even mentioning the mysterious white kaiju being sighted around the world, an increasingly reclusive and obsessive Shatterdome head, and an attractive civilian who falls into his life through an open window.
