Summary
When Mike thought nothing could get worse, Fate took it up as a challenge.
But now, instead of being hunted by the Mind Flayer, Mike's own body is his biggest enemy. He gets diagnosed with cancer. But he's fine. He'll just deal with this on his own. His mom and Nancy are enough. He can deal with the whirlwind of doctors and needles and IVs and feelings as long as his friends are happy. As long as they don't realize that even after all they've been through, one of them is still dying.
But the upside-down isn't done yet. As Mike goes crazy over his feelings for Will, it strikes again. How is Mike going to survive this next attack, now by a human-turned monster named Vecna, when he is already fighting his own personal battle? Will’s voice is panicked and Mike looks at him, as he wants nothing more than to take his hand into his own and brush their fingers together. He almost does it, actually.
Almost, because Will’s fast words outrun him, getting right through Mike’s skin and breaking his heart, taking his soulmark with them.
“You’re the heart, Mike! You’re the heart!”
Mike doesn’t know what’s faster - the tears coming up to his eyes or the ache flooding his veins. He feels an excruciating pain in his right arm, something very close to being burnt alive, as he realises that his words have turned black.
Mike is fourteen years old, when he stops hoping for his soulmate to love him back.

Holly wants peanut butter and nutella on her sandwich, and he knows for a fact Mom never let her have peanut butter and nutella. Too much sugar. Mom is dead.
He spreads peanut butter on one side. A little less nutella on the other. Wonders if he’s doing this wrong, if Mom had a special way of making sandwiches that he suddenly can’t remember.
Something drips off of his chin. Hits his wrist. Itches a little. Dries there. Oh. He’s crying.

Mike shrugs, looking mildly uncomfortable. "Didn't seem important," he says, and Will's annoyance comes back in full force.
"Didn't seem- okay, well did you tell her that we weren't together?" he demands, fingers tightening around Mike's sleeve again.
"Yes!" Mike squawks, wrenching his arm out of Will's grip. He looks- not angry, per se, but definitely a little annoyed now. Confused at Will's reaction, maybe, and- yeah, Will knows he's being overdramatic, but Mike is being entirely too underdramatic about all this, and he thinks they should at least try to meet in the middle. "But I don't know what my parents think. And by the way, I'm not loving how offended you are by people thinking you're dating me."
Will pauses. "Hang on, that's not what I'm saying." He's thrilled by the concept, actually, but he knows he shouldn't be and Mike can't know that, can't know how bad he wants this, which is why Will's had to take a different route.
