"And you'll really pay us just to dance?" Garth asked, feeling his stomach flip at the idea. He didn't know why, especially with the wide grin Tula was giving him. She nudged him with her elbow.
"Come on! This is great! We already love dancing, why not get paid for it?"
And they do need money. He hadn't thought about it when they'd left Atlantis, but you needed money to buy food here on the surface. Sure, they could go back in the water, but he didn't want Arthur to find them... or to hunt or forage the way he had as a child. He wasn't afraid anymore, but... the memories made him shudder, and he nodded at Tula, then at the man.
"Yeah. I guess it's not such a bad idea."
"Great! That's great!" The man smiled encouragingly at them, and Garth found himself smiling back.

He was twelve when he met Tula, in military service with Garth.
He was thirteen when Tula found out.
He was fifteen when he saved King Orin from Ocean Master with Garth, fifteen when he became his protege under the name Aqualad.
He was also fifteen when he met Speedy, or Roy as he would later learn as the boy's name, on a collaboration with Green Arrow in Star City.
It was when he was sixteen that he finally placed a name on the emotion that haunted him when he looked at Roy. Love.
