“No hospital,” Ronan grunts with effort as Matthew and Declan loop the makeshift tourniquet around his torso and tie it tightly over the wound. They help Ronan off the ground, both brothers taking an arm over their shoulders and beginning to walk. Ronan hisses as he’s forced into motion. “Parrish is at the Barns. Go there.”
“Parrish?” Declan asks, confused.
“Adam,” Ronan responds. “My boyfriend, remember.”

Ronan swore. He was already in motion, pounding up the stairs to sort through Declan’s store of weapons. “Don’t take cover anywhere you can be cornered. Move if you think they’re close. Turn on the ‘Find My Friend’ app, I’ll track your phone.”
“It’s not that, really.” Adam’s voice was faux-even, which made the quake at the end more obvious. Suddenly, Ronan realized what was off about the tone: terror, all-encompassing and uncontrollable. “I think I’m dying.”

He wanted to know if Adam was bothered by the predatory nature of the thing, or the dependence on others, or the way his thoughts were affected, or the messiness and general lack of decorum in blood drinking. Gansey could argue with any of those specifics, but he couldn’t convince Adam that his nature was something miraculous if Adam was determined not to believe it.
“Did Ronan ever tell you how he convinced me to bite him?” Adam asked suddenly.
“No.” Gansey hadn’t asked. He was sure Ronan wouldn’t tell him even if he had.

Before Ronan could even process the danger, Adam backed up three paces. Ronan turned to find him with a hand clapped over his mouth and nose, shoulders tense, convulsive shudders rippling down his spine. All at once, Ronan understood. He faced Adam fully, his movements slow, hands visible, like he was standing up to a wild animal. In some ways, he was.
“Parrish. Adam. Christ, when did you last eat?”
Adam’s eyes were wide, the irises swallowed by black and the silver reflection of moonlight. His gaze flicked to Ronan’s wounded hand. Specifically, the drop of blood falling into the grass.

He let himself back into Monmouth on silent feet and was betrayed by the shrill squeak of the hinges on the front door that he’d been telling Gansey to oil for weeks and weeks. The lights were out, but then, they would be— it was late. Later than late, really. Gansey hadn’t cleaned up after himself in the kitchen; the countertop space around their blender was strewn with empty blood bags and supplements and used-up vials of the holy water that Ronan sourced in bulk from the priest at St. Agnes. Father Rodrigo never asked why he needed so much of the stuff, and for that, Ronan was grateful.
(AKA, Gansey and Adam are half-vampires, Ronan was raised by the world's foremost vampire hunter, Niall Lynch, and Noah is a ghost. With sexy results.)
