Summary
It is March 1986, eight months since Starcourt. Nancy has buried herself in her work to avoid acknowledging her fading friendship with Jonathan and Robin is hopelessly in love with a girl from band who she can barely build up the courage to talk to. One cannot let go of the past and the other fears an uncertain future.
When students (literally) start dropping dead, they find themselves brought together, still practically strangers. Their personalities clash, Nancy being so serious and Robin being so... Robin, irritation and confusion defining their first moments, but from that tension a spark is born. As the days drag on and they bounce around from Hawkins to Pennhurst to the Upside-Down, they come to find that they relieve the weight of each other's burdens, or maybe they make them heavier; in times like these, another person loved can just as easily be another person lost. Maybe it's best that they keep it all in, for each other's sake and their own.
But the Upside-Down does not wait for teen romance to sort itself out. There is still a killer to catch, a killer who can reach across the dimensional veil and slaughter troubled youths with his mind, and the kids in Hawkins are all on their own this time.

Robin bumps into Vickie in Indianapolis in a gay bar. Steve tells her to go for it. She does.
Jaeger sweet and disgusting on her tongue and her eyes finding that face again after so many years. Her fingers had closed on Steve’s wrist. Her. Vickie, here? Her hair wasn’t so short any more, curling around the bare tops of her shoulders: sloping and shiny, silvery luminous, that pale, pale skin. Eyes wide and smudged around the edges still with that dark make-up. Dark-painted short nails around a shot glass herself. Freckles standing out even in the shadows and purples of the club.
“It’s a gay bar, Rob,” Steve says, all warm and careful by her elbow, grinning into the curve of her neck as he whispers in her ear, “fucking go for it.”

But not everything is all sunshine and rainbows for Munson, that is where Steve comes in as Eddie's ''knight in shining armour''.
People could say that they have grown quite close since the incident in Hawkins, despite their past tense friendship in high school.

Mike blinks, watching the stars dancing along his vision and forming shapes and figures in the darkness.
“Nothing,” he murmured as he tried to gather something from his scattered thoughts. “I guess…I was just wondering why your mom decided to move you guys back here…After everything, I mean.”
Mike did not dare glance to his right, but he could feel Will’s gaze piercing the side of his face.
“...Why not?” Will finally offered, his gaze flitting to look up at the ceiling.
Mike chews on the bottom of his lip. “I mean…Why would you want to deal with it again?”
“Nobody wants to deal with this, Mike,” He stated, voice strong and stern, “...But…After everything that’s happened, and everybody who’s been affected by it…I don’t think we could just leave again…It affects everybody…And we have to stop him.”
Mike felt chills run up his spine.

Before Robin can even open her mouth to question her, Nancy’s extracting herself from her embrace, grabbing her hand and tugging her towards the stairs. She marches ahead, Robin following, pushing past writhing teenagers with determined fury. That anger, that cold, icy selfish need to have Robin to herself has turned hot and molten in her stomach. It’s no longer quite as fiery, but it’s just as consuming, and as they reach the stairs, Nancy realises what it is she wants.
She’s proved that Robin is hers to Vickie. Now she wants to prove it to Robin, too.
