    Mike keeps the plane window firmly shut and wills himself to fall asleep, rid himself of the tight plane and the infinite space outside of it. He doesn’t manage to. His dad snores the whole trip, reminiscent of the last time they were on a plane together. Again, his mom stays home. Go figure.

    At least the filmmakers got them first class tickets. Flying in style is, if anything, something to focus on. He sips at his Coke and stares at his feet. He’s never been a big fan of heights. As a kid he’d refused to go on roller coasters, opted out of his class egg drop because he had no clue what his body would do up on that roof. Isn’t that ironic. Mike Teavee, the tallest boy in the world, scared of heights.

    A few years after the factory Mike and the other winners get asked to film a expose documentary on the whole thing. He reluctantly agrees.

      In the way that the soft warmth of bed sheets welcomes any normal kid back to the world of the awake, pains welcome others. Each and every morning Mike wakes to a searing flame in his back and stomach and a residual ache everywhere else. His head throbs and the weight of the air feels heavier than it should.

      With a groan Mike forces himself out of bed- not that staying in it would make any difference- and stumbles across his matted carpet, careful to duck his head under the overhead light. He’d made that mistake one too many times. He’d taken down his mirror months ago, not wanting to bother with the horror that was his body anymore than he had to, so his bedroom door is empty and void. A slab of dull brown that just sits there, watching over his now stagnant room that once was filled with whatever he used to be.

      His mom leaves for work early in the morning now, and given how she busies herself with chores at night and avoids Mike, he has to assume it’s because she’s just so horrified by him. It’s such bullshit. She can’t even be honest when her lies are obvious. His dad’s always left early in the morning, being a teacher and all, so the only unusual thing about Mike’s empty house is the absence of his mothers tired slump.

      Mike makes himself some eggs, as per his stupid diet that’s supposed to get him as close to normal width as possible, as if what’s possible even matters anymore. He’s tuned out the taste of eggs by now. They’re cardboard on his tongue. Once he’s done it’s a straight shot to his computer, pajamas still on since there’s no point in changing. His dad keeps trying to talk him into making an effort, always going on about personal growth, but the speeches only last a few minutes before he’s tapering off and going to be sad somewhere else. If there was a lesson to be learned from Mike becoming a freak of nature, his dad definitely did not learn it. Whatever. He’s not sure what was expected anyway, his parents are duds.

      Hours later his phone lets out a light chime, interrupting the soft guitar to tell him to go take a shower. His dad gets home soon. Grumbling to himself, Mike shuts off the computer without bothering to close his tab of geometry work. As much as he’d like to, there's no taking the bathroom mirror off the wall considering his parents need to use it, so he does his best to stare at the ground as he pulls off his clothes.

      As he turns to step into the shower he catches a glimpse of his stomach, scars and all, and squeezes his eyes shut, stepping into the shower and turning up the temperature so it burns his skin. He finds it hard to consider it his skin anymore. After getting put through the machine and getting so much surgery he’d put pageant moms to shame, his body is more morphed horror than Mike.

      It becomes easier as the days pass to spend time with the other losers. Him and Violet sit up on the hill. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they don’t. When they do talk, which they usually do, they talk about the things Mike’s never been able to admit aloud. They talk about the sleepless nights and the numbing agony. He feels alive when he’s with Violet. It’s the same with Veruca. She rants about plans to tear down ideas he’s never allowed himself to think about for more than a second. She detests the people who say they deserved whatever happened in that factory. She loathes all those who allowed her to be dragged down that garbage chute. Augustus always tends to stay away from the heavy topics, though once he quietly mentioned that he can’t remember what it felt like to be a kid. He’s good company.

      The four of them gravitate towards each other without a word. They sit in the hotel lobby and level glares to the passersby - at Veruca’s insistence - splash around in the heated pool - Augustus’ idea - sit in hushed circles on each other's beds - at Violet’s request - and a few times they’ve broken onto the hotel roof. That was Mike’s idea. It’s got a nice view, so long as he stays away from the edge.

      He’s learned things about the others. Weird things. Like Violet puts syrup on her scrambled eggs, Veruca’s trilingual, and Augustus’ favorite color is dull pink. He learns secrets too. Violet can’t sleep. Veruca hasn’t been able to pet an animal since the factory. Augustus refuses to eat sweets unless someone makes him.

      When he wakes up that morning the first thing he sees is a door covered in album covers, cool pictures, and a few he would deny having printed in the first place. One’s from the hotel. The ones with his friends.

      He wakes up that morning and his room is less dull, if only a little bit.

      He wakes up the morning and has a few people to talk to. The few people who matter.
