Toya stopped directly in front of him. The music swelled, the world around them seemed to fade away, and all that existed was the Prince and the knight, separated by duty, united by…something Akito couldn't define.
"Akito," Toya said, his voice soft, barely audible above the music. It was the first time he had addressed him outside of official duties tonight. He extended his hand, palm up, towards Akito.
Akito stared at the hand, the long, elegant fingers, the subtle curve of the palm. It was a hand that commanded armies, signed treaties, and held the fate of the kingdom. And it was being offered to him.
He couldn't speak. He could only stare, his mind reeling, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged bird.
Toya’s smile widened, a hint of playfulness in his eyes. "Are you going to leave me standing here all night, Akito?"
Akito swallowed hard, forcing himself to find his voice. "Your Highness…I…I don't understand."
"I believe the music has made it quite clear," Toya said, his voice laced with gentle amusement. "The waltz has begun. And I would like to dance, Akito."
