    In some shitty bar in downtown Tokyo, hunched over his fifth glass of whiskey.

    He knew he shouldn’t have had even one. Hell, he shouldn’t have walked into the bar at all. He’s been sober for nine months.

    But after the first drink, he stopped caring. He’d already had one. He’d already relapsed. What was the point in stopping there?

    Or; Ward relapses when he and Danny are in Asia so Danny deals with the fallout.

      I liked seeing Ward get to teach Danny something and Danny seeing a path for healing for Ward!

      It was warm in the sun. Ward laughed easily, easier these days than ever before, and when Danny nudged his shoulder playfully in the middle of telling a story about stealing a goat with Davos, Ward didn't even flinch.

      Muscle memory, Danny thought. It wasn't just about learning the things you wanted to learn. It was also things like tensing up when people touched you, because you were braced for it to hurt.

      But you could change that, if you practiced.

      I really loved this piece! Seeing the incremental development of their relationship - mostly impersonal business adjacent conversations morphing into meals and bridging the gulf between them into shared personal history which Ward unsurprisingly rebuffs. But then it is actually Ward that reaches back out!!!

      Favourite bits:

      Fall down, get up, keep trying. It was how he'd made it all the way to the Iron Fist. He wasn't the best or the brightest or the most skilled or the most talented. He was just the one who didn't know how to give up.

      This says volumes about how Danny sees himself. It's also pretty clear-sighted.

       

      "Uh ... sure," Ward said, with the general attitude of someone who was watching his plans slide out of his control and glide down a long steep hill on a runaway skateboard.

      That description made me laugh :)

       

      "My dad killed your parents," Ward said, looking at him steadily. "I tried to kill you."

      "You also held my hand on my first day of first grade because I was scared," Danny said.

      "What?" That obviously threw him for a loop. "I don't remember that."

      "Me and Joy, we started school at the same grade school you went to. You were really embarrassed by us. You told us to stay away from you and pretend we didn't know you." He smiled a little. "And then we got off the bus, and Joy and I were absolutely petrified. And you held our hands --"

      Ward's hand had seemed so big to him then, wrapped around his own. It was disconcerting to look back and realize that Ward had been just a sixth-grader, a child like himself.

      "... and took us where we needed to go. I wasn't scared at all anymore. I remember thinking that I didn't have to be scared of anything, not with you there."

      The image of prickly, embarrassed tween-Ward nonetheless taking Joy and Danny by the hand and leading them to their classroom and the thought that little Danny trusted him so much despite his otherwise often terrible behavior. And Ward feels so much guilt over what he's done and the past and has no concept of how to deal with it or Danny.

      I love the glimpses into their childhood that you weave into the stories!
