Mothiva needed to spring back after her blowup with Zasp, and if she could nab one of the artifacts, it'd secure her position in the Explorer's Association and the fame that comes with it.
Hoaxe found himself fighting for survival, exiled from the only home he had ever been accepted in after a plan to improve his life and get the respect of his peers went awry.
And the Ant Kingdom shuddered as it realized that its best hope of finding the Everlasting Sapling lay in the hands of a bandit, a diva, and a sneaky little mimic.

Hoaxe is sick of his life in the Wasp Kingdom, slaving away for bugs who hate him, constantly looking over his shoulder. But he has a plan; a plan that will catapult him from another run-of-the-mill janitor to sorcerer extraordinaire, and all he needs is the berries to make it happen.
All of that changes when a delegation from a foreign kingdom arrives, asking for him by name and claiming to be able to reunite him with his birth family. He may still have a way to leverage this in his favor, but things get complicated when Queen Vanessa sends General Fuff along with him to make contact with this new kingdom; years ago, Fuff had hurt Hoaxe in a way that none of the other Wasps ever could.
Fuff, too, has his problems, namely that he's leaving everything he's ever known to cross forbidden lands to visit a kingdom that seems to hate everything that he is. But if a wimpy little janitor can do it, so can he...right?

Anyway, I bring this up because in this story, MANY of the culprits of that feeling all come together to screw one specific person over, and that's exactly how our narrative will begin.

Yet when the Wasp King opened its container and saw the Sapling's luxuriant, majestous visage, and in front of their eyes consumed several of its leaves, and burnt it down before they could even think about using its power, all three of them could feel none of their previous feats would mean anything compared to this.
