Accalia might have begun to wonder about the goddess’s eyes, which were closed in deep and peaceful slumber, had she not stopped herself; had she not determined in that moment that she would not call Selene beautiful. That she would find the curve of her lips irksome. That if the lines of Selene’s face invited attention, it would be Accalia’s scorn.
As quickly as the whisper of a soft curiosity rose in her heart, it was replaced by her own determination and resentment. She reminded herself that in all the stories, Selene never did anything in particular for humanity; that the goddess was hoarding a power that Accalia’s own kindred could put to good use.
She was here to do a job, after all.
She was here to steal fire from the goddess.
