Mai and Zuko both have their own weaknesses in establishing a long-term relationship. Mai is the one who is not used to expressing her feelings, while Zuko is the one who is used to facing his problems alone. Even so, they always overcome dissimilarities together.
When they are more mature. They realize as a couple, they want to be more open with each other. But it seems that for Zuko, old habits die hard. He thought he was hiding his problem for Mai's favor. In reality, it made him lose her. Situations might get better, but being apart from each other only makes it doesn't feel right.

Zuko dropped his gaze from the sky, watching in abject horror as Aang flew through the air. He closed his glider mid flight, angling it and his body into a point before slamming into a large pile of compact snow. There was a group of children clad in deep blue parkas surrounding the pile Aang had disappeared in. Momo flew over their heads a few circles, before landing on the top of the snow. A moment later, Aang’s head popped out under where Momo had landed.
The young Avatar sneezed a layer of snow off his face, before he stared laughing loudly. The children around him were cheering, asking him to do it again, and for him to let them do it as well. They were clambering up the pile, not seeming to notice how stuck Aang currently was.
The younger boy locked eyes on Zuko, begging him with large eyes to help him. A chuckle came to Zuko’s side. Sokka was doing his best to smoother the laughs moving through his throat. “Just waterbender yourself out, oh great Avatar.”
