It’s been nearly ten years. Overwatch is gone from the public eye, forgotten, and so are Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes. Their message, their work, their victories, none of it is remembered, only the mutilated half-truth of their mistakes remains. Yet here they still stand, broken and divided. Not dead and not quite living.
Every day is a struggle for survival, but the thought of dying before saying goodbye is more than either of them can handle. So they keep going, keep hoping that the other will be the one to say “Hello again”.
Sombra, meanwhile, is sick of Gabe brooding and forcing her to keep surveillance of Soldier 76 in the name of “intel”, so she takes their lives into her own hands.
A fire is only dead once the embers cool to ashes, without the lingering heat of embers there is no risk of flames. While their fire never really died, they have left themselves with just the ashes and embers.

There is something about this fic that won't leave my mind. I've read it a few times now and each time I love it more than the last. In general, I think the duality of Jack/76 & Gabe/Reaper are difficult for a lot of authors to balance as they seem night and day to one another. There's a quiet "bleed over" during their reunion that is so, so, so perfect -- when Reaper holds all of the power to destroy Jack and chooses not to. Look for the use of "Gabe" in the prose as well -- that was brilliantly done by Sochineya. A brief moment, blink-and-you-miss-it, but there nonetheless.

Summary
It was always a foregone conclusion: brother against brother, light versus dark. It was going to be Reaper against Soldier: 76, Reyes against Morrison. There was no arguing this, there was no doubt-- it was meant to be. Destined. Perhaps this was why the sight of Jack Morrison's body came as such a shock, even to someone who had been hellbent on killing him for five years.
Gabriel has a postmortem conversation with Jack as he tries to come to terms with his rival's unexpected death.

Gorgeous piece that makes your heart hurt. I think about this work a lot and I'm glad I found it again. This is my favorite kind of R76 -- two men with such a profound need for one another that they'll resort to ugly codependency. One of my favorite depictions of Reaper a well.
