Summary
Ava drifts, flitting from one formless place to another, catching glimpses of vaguely familiar faces, hearing things she has heard before—please don’t leave me, I don’t want you to die.
Beatrice so rarely asks her for anything, and Ava hates that she couldn’t even give her this one thing. The least she can do is go back.
Preferably alive.

Summary
Ava rolls over to face Beatrice properly, tucking her hands under the pillow. “Will you read me some?”
Beatrice considers this, one finger absently skimming down the spine of the book, mesmerizingly enough that Ava almost forgets she’s waiting for an answer. “If you like,” Beatrice replies. She says that, often, in place of yes, as though Ava can be trusted to want things safely, and Beatrice can give these things to her, as long as Ava’s wanting goes first, and doesn’t go too far ahead.
Beatrice’s reading voice is quiet and measured. Ava can almost understand, piecing together the language out of other languages she knows. And then there’s the way Beatrice speaks, so specifically that there’s that feeling of recognition, even when the words she says are only sounds.
-
After leaving St Michael’s, Ava does everything she can to support Diego, including taking him to extracurriculars. Beatrice is his aikido instructor, and it changes everything.
