Kali Prasad lives a normal life in Hawkins, Indiana, insofar as being the only brown lesbian in town can be considered normal. It’s boring on the best of days, when everyone leaves her the fuck alone, and on worse ones… Well. She loves a set few people - her aunt, her sister, her best friends - but if her family didn’t need her, she’d be out of here in a second. And then her sister goes missing, and her family needs her even more.
Not so far away in Chicago, but what may as well be another planet, Subject 008 - Jonathan - has built a family for himself out of scraps and ashes. Hawkins, Indiana took everything away from him, and he has no intentions of ever going back. But when it turns out the brother he took for dead might be out in the world, he has to decide if it’s worth going back to Hell to try to shut it all down.
