They looked at each other, then, really looked at each other. Goro saw the boots, the piercings, the cloud of black hair. But he saw how pale Ren was, too. He saw the eyebags and the tired smile. He saw the newfound confidence, but he saw the pain. He saw life, but he saw death. And he didn’t really know what Ren was seeing in him at that moment. Probably something dying as well, a baby bird fallen from its nest. Something to rehabilitate. It sickened him.
(But, while Ren looked broken, he looked beautiful in tandem. So it wasn’t too hard to think that, maybe, Ren thought Goro was beautiful just as much as broken too.)
