Ivan’s eyes glitter when he lifts the card to the light. “Can you believe this?”
Lovro scoffs in place of words. He doesn’t think he can muster them, anyway, in the condition he’s in. He knows the real promise of all this: privacy. Oh, precious, precious privacy.
“You have your stuff?”
“All of it, everything,” Ivan agrees, meaningfully. Lovro rolls his eyes to cover the flush.
“Come on, then, we’re on the fifth floor.” Lovro extricates himself from the quicksand confines of the pillowy armchair. His heart is beating quicker than he can believe. “Let’s go.”

“Did I ask you to get it for me? Come on, Ivan. Let’s go. I want to see your new school. I want to take a lot of pictures of you and send them to my mother so she can say how grown up and handsome you are now.” She pulled at his arm and he let her guide him.

Summary
The first time that Ivan notices him, he’s on the tram. The sun hangs low in the sky, at the perfect angle for rich, golden light to pour through the windows, and it’s enough to almost have him in a good mood.
Despite the light, his eyes are still drawn to the boy from the moment he steps onto the tram, even though he’s shrouded by shadow, backlit by the sun. Before even seeing his face, Ivan is drawn to the shape of him. To the way that he walks, a little unsure of himself. To the timbre of his voice as one of his friends says something that has him complaining.
