Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.

Daniel didn’t know the history of the bath, but he probably would someday.
One day, his curiosity would get the better of him and he’d go digging to find the fossilised pieces of Armand’s past and start putting them together like palaeontologists do with dinosaur bones. And like them he wouldn’t get it right first try but it’s not like he would stop trying.
And the narrative where Armand was upset by the bath made more sense.
The actual fact, that Armand was sure of, was that he could have gone through with the bath and given Daniel no clues at all about any of his prior experiences if Daniel hadn’t asked Armand to affirm that he wanted it.
That had been the distressing part.

OR: Daniel treats Armand nicely enough that Armand starts wondering if the way people treated him in the past wasn't good enough.

But why would Louis get up? Why would Armand? Their obsession with destruction was the same–well developed, eternal. It was why, no matter how hard they’d tried, their blossoming romance was always meant to decay. And that was the way of the world, wasn’t it? Vampires were the only thing that aged and yet did not die–but the flowers brought to you under the balcony did. The love that propelled their purchase did.
