Summary
The next thing he sees and knows isn’t a dream is Ellie’s little hand reaching over his heart and balling up his shirt in her fist. Her head lays on his shoulder and her ear presses against his chest. He feels her small exhales and they bring fresh, unbidden tears to his eyes. She doesn’t notice his half-lidded gaze, but he sees just fine as she brings the hand still clutched around his flannel up to her nose and presses it to her face like it’s the only thing keeping her from floating away.
Almost on muscle memory alone, Joel aims to press a kiss to her hair where it’s up to his own nose, but he can’t quite get it right. Still, his cheek ends up against the soft tendrils of Ellie’s brown strands and he thinks it’s enough. He hopes it gives her some meager comfort.
It’s all he has to offer.
(Inspired by the famous picture of Ellie sleeping all curled up on the forest floor during episode 2 - essentially an exploration of how Ellie becomes more than cargo to Joel through Ellie's very cute sleeping habits)

Summary
Zuko’s present to Sokka for their five year anniversary was a visit to the Southern Water tribe. Or, well, that was what Sokka thought his present was. In reality, Zuko had a much more meaningful gift in mind, if all went to plan.
But he would need help, and he knew exactly who to go to.

Zuko plans to propose to Sokka, but soon realizes that he knows less about Southern Water Tribe culture than he thought he did. Luckily, Kanna is there to help him.
The plan however, takes him away from Sokka, who starts to suspect the worst.

“Come on love, talk to me,” Sokka said.
Zuko looked down. “What if they don’t think I’m … good enough for you?”
“Oh, love…” Sokka pressed a gentle kiss to the crown of Zuko’s head. “That’s not gonna happen. You already won over Gran Gran, and you know my dads love you.”
“Yeah but... they love me as their son’s best friend, not as his boyfriend.” He sniffed. “I’ve hurt you before, how would they know I won’t do it again?”

Sokka and Zuko have decided to tell Hakoda and Bato about their relationship. Sokka’s nervous, sure, but Zuko is downright terrified, so he enlists Kanna's help, and learns a little bit about cooking and a lot about life in the process.
Then things don't go quite right at dinner. Luckily, Dadkoda is there to help and Zuko begins to realize that maybe he can be loved after all (and that maybe he's been loved all along).

“I’m uh… sorry about the nightmare. I didn’t mean to bother you.” Zuko looked away from her, down at his hands tightly wrapped around the topmost blanket.
Kanna had to fight the urge to wrap him up in a hug and never let go. She would respect his space, but spirits, after he said that it was almost impossible to tamp down the instinct.
“Zuko, you never have to apologize for something like that. And you are never a bother.” She reached forward slowly, squeezing his shoulder in what she hoped was a comforting manner. “I know you’ve had a tough go at it. But you’re family now, and not just because of Sokka.”

The second time Zuko visits the Southern Water Tribe, Kanna makes it her personal mission to give him a home. Nothing less for Sokka’s boyfriend after all.

And Kanna was NOT happy.
Oh sure, she could recognize that he was much better than his predecessors, and she was grateful he had ended the war.
But she didn't like him.
How could she be expected to? He had invaded her village, grabbed her, insulted her, and then fought her grandson.
He had made her grandchildren leave her.
She would tolerate him, she decided, but she would not forgive him.

Summary
Sokka’s familiar enough with the breathlessness now that it doesn’t surprise him. He knows that today will be a day where he acts. He’ll act ok, he’ll act happy, he’ll act like his heart doesn’t feel like it’s been shifted slightly in the wrong direction.
It’s not healthy, he knows, to hide this. Especially from Zuko, who would understand - and maybe that’s worse, because it means he’s felt this too - and instantly try to get him to stay safe and comfortable in their room.
But that’s exactly why Sokka can’t tell him. He doesn’t need to be coddled. He doesn’t need to be treated like he’s close to breaking because he’s not (he knows what that feels like and it’s so much worse than struggling to take a breath). Everyone went through the war, same as him, and they’ve all endured so much more on top of that that Sokka can’t bring the attention to his stupid inability to complete even the most basic functions necessary to sustain human life.

Summary
Sokka thinks he screams as the firebender falls over, but he is sure he does when his partner’s body starts convulsing. He has never known terror like that before, not even as he was holding Toph’s hand, certain they would both fall to their deaths in a war they were too young to fight.
He didn’t know terror like that was even possible, survivable. It stops his heart. He actually feels it skip a beat as he runs over to Zuko, desperately grabbing onto any part of him that he can reach.

“Sokka…” She sighs. “What do you remember?”
He shrugs nonchalantly. “Some assholes attacked us and I took an arrow to the shoulder. Zuko hid us out in a cave. I assume at some point we were rescued. That or I’m dead and this is a not very interesting version of the spirit realm.”
Katara smooths his hair back like mom used to, and he’s struck suddenly by how grown up she is. They’ve both become adults since their world-saving adventures with the avatar, but it’s easy to forget that his little sister isn’t so little anymore.
“You were bleeding out, and we weren’t expecting you back for a while, so… Zuko used firebending to cauterize the wound. It saved your life, but he’s not taking it well.” She looks away from him and Sokka is silently grateful. He doesn’t want her to see the blood drain from his face at her words.
