With the ghost of a childhood friend haunting you and his adoptive brother following you around, playing hero becomes a bit more complicated.

Mierda, he must have spent far too much time in Venatori hands, if such small gestures were affecting him this much. As if the Shadow Dragon hadn’t stated his distrust and dislike of him in the clearest possible terms.
(Or: Lucanis and Rook don't start off on the right foot. Only, Rook might not despise Lucanis as much as he suspected, and the Crow might be taking a fancy to the surly Shadow Dragon, too…)

Summary
Rook was right. Lucanis hadn't expected the Dalish elf that single-handedly broke him out of the Ossuary to actually call in his favour. Much less for it to be a contract to kill Gods. A contract not made easier by Rook's secrecy, Spite's growing interest in the elf, and finding out who betrayed him a year earlier. At least the coffee is good.

Lucanis turned his head from Rook to look at the Venatori, but from behind him the Venatori’s claw-like hands kept Lucanis’ head in place, forcing him to watch. He leaned in, wine breath and metallic scent, making Lucanis’ gut lurch even more, as if the view wasn’t sickening enough. “Wonder how mangled he needs to be until you sing, Crow.”
(After Lucanis attempts (and fails) to kill Zara, he grapples with new-found betrayals, lost purposes, and feelings he can no longer ignore and refuse to acknowledge all the same. Rook, meanwhile, does what he does best: getting himself skewered by various blood magic attacks, doing dark necromantic rituals to prevent evil witches to come back to life, sneaking into a Venatori gala, and eventually finding himself smack dab in the heart and actual mind of certain assassin)
