“... How long’ve you been on it, then?” Martyn asks, eyebrow raised. Ren pouts.
“... half hour,” he mumbles. Martyn lets out a quiet, fondly exasperated laugh.

Summary
Scott remembered when Saturdays were the knifes edge of his and Jimmy’s relationship. Considering Jimmy's ‘chronic back pain’ as Scott had then believed, he sometimes desperately needed an entire day reserved for him to just be fully horizontal for more hours than he was vertical. Scott had found out, mere months ago, that Jimmy was a hybrid. Specifically, an avian with massive golden wings that were the true cause of his back pains, considering he kept them tightly bound with belts in order to pass as human in the over-city. And alongside that had come so many things, from murmured words that made him want to melt to beloved little comparisons Scott could hardly stand at times. Jimmy thought he was like the sky. Scott understood that coming from him, there was no higher praise. Scott didn't have anything nearly as eloquent to deliver to Jimmy, even if, for months now, the man had been his dearest heart.
He was beautiful.
Yet Scott didn't understand the burden that came with that word.

Summary
Propped up against the bus stop, Legs grabbed his thermos from his bag, he twisted the lid off and took a few sips of the drink. It slid down his throat, warming him ever so slightly. Legs always disliked how quickly the taste of blood had become appealing. It used to bring back horrid memories, the smell itself would throw the doctor back to his war days. Now, it was too sweet. It tasted too good, especially when warm. It was upsetting.
Most of this was upsetting.

Summary

He hears their voices, he hears them calling to him, he hears them begging and demanding and crying and dying and—
He yanks the handle again, and this time he thinks that fire has begun hitting his back with mercy now. The burn draws him away from the screams, and all that remains is the constant lingering feeling of smoke and flame in his lungs.
He shudders, and his body adjusts. It's all he did, really, adapt. He was good at surviving where he shouldn't have, and good at failing to die where he should have.
He runs his hands over the scars on his arms, and he remembers the hands clawing at his skin. They begged and begged, and each time he failed. The water was burning, and he knew he needed to be careful. He cranked the volume up to the max that it could be, and the fire spreading across his back was instant.
