Mu Qingfang hesitated, his professional demeanor cracking just enough to reveal a touch of discomfort. "The pollen binds to the victim's unfulfilled desires, feeding on the imbalance. To purge it fully, one must...align their qi with the object of that desire. Through dual cultivation. It's the only way to break the cycle and restore equilibrium. Without it, the dreams will return, stronger each time, until..."

The room fell silent, the fizz of the bath salts the only sound, like distant rain. Liu Qingge's face drained of color, then flushed crimson in a rush that made him look feverish all over again. Dual cultivation. With Shen Qingqiu. The very thought sent a fresh wave of heat through him, mortifying and undeniable.

“Yes!” Shang Qinghua said immediately, then backpedaled at Shen Qingqiu’s withering glare. “Okay, no, not exactly—but, Bro, the optics! People already think you’re secretly betrothed. The rumor mill’s gone into overdrive.”

Shen Qingqiu pinched the bridge of his nose. “This sect truly needs better hobbies. Regardless, I repeat: I am not flirting. I am negotiating. Politely.”

“Politely negotiating with your eyes all soft and your hand on his arm,” Shang Qinghua muttered into his sleeve.

What if Triwizard Tournament, but Hunger Games?

Centuries ago, instead of hiding from muggles with the Statute of Secrecy, wizards used a ritual to create a dimension for all magical beings to live openly. But maintaining that freedom comes at a lethal price. Every seven years, the worthiest students in Europe have the great honour of being selected to compete in a tournament: three deadly tasks, two months of training, one victor. Grindelwald’s Ministry demands it. But certain troublesome students only follow rules which happen to align with their own plans.

Tom Riddle intends to win. Harry Potter refuses to lose. From rivalry comes respect, and an intense interest that, once sparked, refuses to burn out. They are binary stars locked in orbit in a world built to break them apart. But the world doesn’t define them, their choices do: what they decide to fight for, and who they choose to trust. If they get those right, they might be able to define the world.

“And you, Evans? What are you doing after graduation?”

“Dunno,” Evans replied, staring up at the sky from where he was laying on the courtyard floor and impeding foot traffic like the menace he was. “Maybe I’ll dismantle the government. It could use a good spring cleaning. Might be fun.”

Everyone laughed like it was a joke, and Tom felt a part of him wither and die at the stupidity of his generation.

Harry Evans was, to those that met him, rather average. A brilliant student, definitely. Kind and dedicated, absolutely. Handsome, maybe. But otherwise unremarkable.

He slipped into the ranks of Hufflepuff without a whisper and would have remained a bland face in the background of Tom’s life—if not for the fact that something was quintessentially wrong with him.

Tom, the only person who seemed to see beneath the veneer of banality and recognise the dangerous cunning that lurked there, found himself facing an opponent he had no idea how to combat.

OR, how Tom Riddle went from dreaming of ruling Wizarding Britain to dreaming of punching Harry Evans in the fucking face.
