Summary
“You're a good teacher,” he says, and his voice is deep, rough in a way that does unfortunate things to her concentration.
“Thank you.” She doesn't look up, continuing to coil cables with practiced efficiency.
“I'm Cassian.”
“I know.” She saw his name on the roster. Cassian Vallaincourt. Cottage twelve. Three-week stay. Party of four including his brother Rhysand, another brother named Azriel, and a woman named Morrigan McArthur.
“And you are?”
“Working.” She straightens, speaker in hand, and finally meets his eyes. Mistake. Up close, he's even more devastating. The scar through his eyebrow is thin and white, old enough to have a story. His jaw is sharp enough to cut, softened only slightly by the shadow of evening stubble. And those eyes—those impossible eyes—hold equal parts amusement and interest.
“That's an unusual name,” he says, his mouth curving. “Your parents must be very industrious.”
Despite herself, despite all her walls and careful distance, her lips twitch. “Nesta.”
____
During her last summer working at the resort in the Catskills, Nesta meets Cassian. Despite her valiant efforts, he barrels right past her defenses and changes her life forever.

Summary
Azriel straightens. “Nesta, this is my brother, Cassian. Fresh off the Greyhound.”
Her lips curve, amused. “He looks like it.”
Cassian huffs a laugh. “And you look like trouble.”
“Only to the deserving.” She pats the space on the rug beside her guitar like she’s calling a dog.
He drops to sit, cross-legged, trying not to knock into anything breakable, which in this room includes at least eight people.
Nesta eyes his jeans, his boots, his too-short haircut. “So what’d you run away from? Factory? Farm? Fiancée?”
“Indiana,” he says. “Wanted to see what all the fuss was about.”
_______
1969. Cassian follows his brother into the anti-war movement, and falls straight into Nesta—a sharp-tongued folk singer who wears her defiance like armor, who teases him, dares him until he jumps, touches him until he’s lost. Between songs and sit-ins, joints and daisy chains, marches and midnight laughter, they fall into the wild rhythm of the sixties. But love in a world on fire is never simple.

Summary
Nesta hasn’t heard the sound of a voice—familiar or otherwise—in five days. Not since Cassian slammed the balcony doors behind him on his way out after a particularly nasty argument, wingbeats like thunder retreating into the clouds.
It seems that all she can do these days is anger the ones around her.
She hasn’t left the House of Wind in two weeks. She hasn’t been allowed to. Not since Rhysand told her, voice black with rage, “If it wasn’t for Feyre, if you weren’t my brother’s mate, I would have had you executed for what you did.”
Not since Amren said she belonged in one of the cells beneath the Court of Nightmares, because, “Some monsters don’t stay tamed, no matter how hard you try to civilize them.”
Not since Mor stared at her and said to her cousin, “I don’t know why you’re surprised, Rhys. You’ve always known she’s reckless and useless in equal measure. She never did become one of us.”
Not since Cassian stood in that same room and stayed silent.
_____
Even after the Mask is safely returned by Bryce, Nesta is confined to the House of Wind. Deciding enough is enough, she makes plans to sever something that was supposed to be her sacred forever.

Summary
She feels suddenly like she's suffocating.
But Cassian is back to examining the walls, running his hand over the designs. "She really did cover everything, didn't she? Made beauty wherever she could."
"She needed it." Nesta's chest feels tight. "Painting kept her sane."
"And your father's carvings." Cassian says, that warm tone still in his voice. "Elain's garden. It's remarkable, really, how your family found ways to create even in the worst circumstances. To hold onto hope and beauty when everything else was falling apart."
The words hit her like a blow.
Hope. Beauty. Creation.
She looks around the cottage, trying to see what he's seeing. Evidence of life, of joy carved out of misery. Proof that the Archerons survived, that they remained human even as they starved.
Proof that Feyre and Elain and her father existed here, but nowhere in this miserable hovel is there any evidence of Nesta.
—————
After visiting the decrepit cottage where she grew up, Nesta is forced to confront a painful truth. Spiraling from the realization that she’s absent from her own history, Cassian tries to right the wrongs that have been done to her.

Summary
"Excuse me," she manages, standing abruptly. The room tilts slightly, and she has to catch herself on the back of her chair.
"Are you alright?" Feyre is half out of her seat, concern etched across her features.
"Yes," she says. "I just need some air."
"You look pale," Cassian says quietly. He's watching her with those sharp hazel eyes that see too much. "Maybe you should—"
"I said I'm fine." The words come out sharper than she intends, but another cramp is building and she needs to get out of here before she breaks down in front of them. Before they have more ammunition to use against her.
—————
Nesta's first fae cycle hits during a tense family dinner, but she doesn't understand what's happening to her body. Determined not to show weakness, she pushes through the pain until she collapses during training the next morning. When Cassian discovers the extent of her suffering, everything changes.
