Summary
Scaramouche says, “I figured you were out here alone and someone would have to take one for the team and make sure you’re not by yourself.”
“Take one for the team?” Kazuha scoffs with a poorly hidden smile at Scaramouche’s sarcasm. “Ah, wow. I see.”
Scaramouche makes a small noise of acknowledgment and lets his attention drift towards the inside of the house. Through the glass door, he spots a countdown on the television.
“You know, if I knew any better,” Kazuha says, voice barely above a whisper. “I’d say that you want to be out here with me. Or wherever I may happen to be, for that matter.”
(alternatively: Scaramouche starts his new year exactly where he wants to be – by Kazuha's side.)

My dearest Miko, I regret to inform you that the puppet is a failure. Simply put, it is weak-hearted. However, I cannot bring myself to destroy it. Therefore, I leave it to you. You are just as much its creator as I am. Was it your influence that made it so empathetic? I’m curious; Will you teach it the meaning of humanity, of kindness? Or could this puppet teach you something? Either way, the prototype will have no claim to the Shogunate as I am creating a new puppet, this one stronger in constitution. The little thing is yours now. Do with it as you wish.
