Trying to hold onto his fight, Peter shoots back, “Yeah? And what’s that?”
“To have nothing, after being able to believe you could have everything.”
The streets are dirty, crowded, and the jagged bumps in the asphalt are hardly comfortable to sleep on. They’re home, though.
Peter is just about finished with New York City. It’s gotten impossibly harder to find even a scrap of food, and what little belongings he does have are unlikely to keep him alive through the winter. And the memories. God, the painful memories here.
So he saves up. Makes a plan to get out of there.
Then, somehow, he accidentally saves Tony fucking Stark from a gang of eight mercenaries, and the majestic plan disintegrates into ash.
The worst part about it, he knows, isn’t even that he met Tony. It’s that Tony met him.

“No!” Peter’s eyes flew open. Tony looked down at him, frowning with equal parts guilt, concern, and confusion. “I mean, uh – that’s just – not necessary. I have super healing. Radioactive spider bite, remember? Give me five minutes.”
More like five hours – but no way in hell was he going to tell Stark that.
A medical examination at Avengers Tower might mean taking blood and DNA samples.
Blood and DNA samples would reveal, clear as day, Spider-Man’s crippling addiction to heroin.

When the Avengers stumble upon Peter Parker, he is not a fifteen year old, bubbly, nerdy high school student. He is eighteen, homeless, and a drug addict.
Peter refuses to let them discover the squalor he lives in when the mask is off, refuses to ruin their perfect little makeshift family with all his dirt, refuses to get too close.
Unfortunately, he doesn't really have a choice.

Shuri had been fine with that at first; she could handle a little discomfort from time to time. However, as she began to realize her soulmate was more danger-prone than most, she pitied them. How could someone go through so much? What was happening to them?
Peter didn't think he had a soulmate. It was completely possible and he was perfectly alright with not having one. That meant he could be Spider-Man without the guilt.
