Dick stood stock still, his heartbeat hammering in his ears. As the rain pattered against his suit, his shoulder throbbed violently. The man in front of him was talking, but Dick couldn’t hear what he’d said. The rain was so loud. He felt something awful crack open inside him that he’d carefully never examined before.
Years of pushing every painful thing aside have built up a heavy debt, and it's time for it to be paid. Dick Grayson is due to face the storm.

This was sincerely phenomenal. So rarely do I see topics like sexual assault get the depth and care they deserve. I know it’s a large ask for every fanfic writer to know how to respectfully and deeply engage with intense, painful topics like this, but regardless, it’s incredibly refreshing to see when someone CAN do that. My biggest pet peeve about “Blockbuster aftermath” stories are when one of Dick’s family members figures out his trauma for him, or bullies an answer out of him. It deprives his character of what little agency he still had, and it’s gross to see him moved around by the plot, rather than the other way around.
And here, in this story, even in the moments Dick isn’t in control, it’s himself he is fighting, and that feels so much more powerful than just having things happen to him over and over. He makes poor choices because he’s traumatized, and he’s sick, and he’s hurting himself.
This is a story that doesn’t just understand the fundamentals of Dick Grayson’s character, but the fundamentals of writing on the subject of sexual assault and abusive relationships. I truly commend you for that, and I am inspired by it.
Additionally, there is such careful attention paid to Dick’s Romani heritage in this fic, even though they’re just a few small moments in the grand scheme of the story, and that was such a pleasant surprise. Doing the work to have a Romani character (or any character of a marginalized race/ethnicity) meaningfully engage in their culture in fic is so so important, and unfortunately I feel like the Batman fandom could be doing a lot better in its acknowledgment of Dick’s heritage. This was so lovely to see!)
The prose and steady rise and fall of narrative in this story are also impressive, and I just know I’ll be returning to re-read portions of this story anytime I need to warm-up my writer’s brain.
This story was beautiful. Thank you for writing it.

This sucks. All the teen rom coms Fig watches lied, there isn’t anything fun or cool about being in love- not in love- with your best friend. It’s just uncomfortable and weird and has the potential to ruin everything.The worry crawls under his skin and sits there like static, buzzing to life any time Riz smiles at him or pokes him in the ribs or frowns in Fabian’s direction like he’s thinking too hard. Things that used to happen without a second thought every day, and now Fabian can’t help but do a double take, or jump a little when they happen. Which then makes Riz do his little there’s-a-puzzle-to-solve-here frown at Fabian; and what if he thinks Fabian’s acting weird because he likes the Ball? So then Fabian acts more freaked out and Riz pays more attention and- it’s all just some horrifying positive feedback loop of weird unspoken feelings that makes Fabian feel like he’s perpetually falling down a set of stairs.

(Okay but for real, what a creative way to show Ayda’s thought process! It felt so natural to read, like how a real train of thought feels—at least for me as someone with ADHD. The characterization is flawless *and* well executed, to boot. Subtle but strong and confident in its direction. This author has an incredibly strong grasp on character and showing that speaker’s point of view through narration. What a wonderful read!)
