Summary
Sometimes, if he let go of his mind, he caught wisps of memory. Small things. Indistinguishable shapes. Sometimes a certain shade of color did it. The deep purple of someone’s shirt out of the corner of his eye, or the flash of someones gold watch catching the sun just right. Sometimes it was a certain smell catching him off guard. The cologne on the cashier ringing him out at the store, the smell of gasoline as he walked into a gas station. Lighting a match and smelling the sulfur and watching the wood as it burned to nothing. But just as soon as it happened it was gone. He was still alone. Michael was beginning to think that's how it always would be.

Summary

November, 1985. Steve has been all sorts of lost since the Fourth of July and his dad has had enough. When he sends him packing, Steve has to learn how to fend for himself. And he might just learn a few other things too, with the help of Hawkins resident metalhead.
Takes place between S3 and S4. Canon divergent in that the Byres and El stay in Hawkins, otherwise canon compliant.

Summary
He had gone through the whole attracted-also-to-men crisis in the years before, so even though he still hadn’t managed to tell Robin, or even find the courage to say the words to describe himself aloud, the attraction wasn’t a surprise. It had occurred to him when Jonathan had won over Nancy that while he was mostly jealous of Jonathan because he was pretty sure some part of him would always love Nancy, orbiting back to her at any given opportunity, sometimes he was jealous of Nancy, of the way she let Jonathan kiss her, his big hands resting on her face, and actually, in retrospect, the whole hand thing should have become apparent to him way earlier than it had.
All that to say, Steve was well aware he was attracted to Eddie and occasionally dreamt about sucking on Eddie’s fingers, but it didn’t have to mean anything, and moreover, couldn’t. The whole thing with El and the Upside Down derailed his life, but eventually he was going to get his shit back together and back on track, and he couldn’t be doing that and also bringing men home on the weekends.

That’s how he found Jason and his band of jackasses as they waited in the parking lot of the record store that Eddie had just managed to get a job at. A job Steve had heard him ramble excitedly over thanks to a boss with a decent music taste, way better than Yours, Harrington, and an employee discount on any purchase. The van, Eddie’s van, sat pitifully right behind Carver, two tires sliced.
The sun had just barely moved to set.
Steve’s heart thundered.

‘ “Robin, that sounds like a date. Is it a date? Have you been lying to me about being a lesbian because you just didn’t want to hurt my feelings? Or - Fuck - is Eddie just pretty enough that you don’t care that he doesn’t have boobies?”
Steve knew that he was rambling, he knew that he wasn’t necessarily being fair in what he was saying, so he finally stopped talking and looked up at Robin, ready to be chewed out. Instead, she was just staring at him a bit confusedly, a small smile quirking at the corner of her lips.“You know I’m as gay as they come, Steve, Eddie knows that too. And no, being a ‘pretty enough’ boy doesn’t magically bypass lesbianism? Though I do think it’s important to point out that you’re the one that said the words ‘Eddie is pretty enough that you don’t care that he doesn’t have boobies’ unprompted, buddy.”
