That’s not the real issue, even if it certainly doesn’t help that his hamburger helper is evidently missing a significant chunk of hamburger in it.
The problem is, that this is a struggle meal. It’s a bleak yet forceful reminder of the predicament that life has landed him in:
Jimmy, after everything, is struggling. He’s struggling with no way out because he’s reached a dead end in the road consisting of damp gravel and a moulding horse carcass beaten to submission.
And, to make matters worse, he now has two mouths to feed.
Jimmy is forced to take responsibility for his actions.
Maybe it would've been better to let him go scot-free after all.

Summary
The hallways are only lit by the distant light of the night-time screen, this time of night.
Swansea’s booming snores bounce off of the poorly insulated walls, accompanied by the slightly quieter intern’s snuffling. Jimmy’s room is silent, an odd thing considering the man’s tendency to shuffle around constantly. Probably nothing, though.Curly can't sleep, and so decides to get up for a drink of water. He talks to Jimmy, and wonders what exactly the man is doing standing outside of Anya's room in the dead of night.

Summary
Curly is a coward, at heart. It’s something he’s known since he was young, and it’s what ultimately failed his crew in the end.
He doesn’t want to fail anyone else. If the universe had insisted on wasting the cryopod on him, then the least he could do is let the families of his crew see him if they wanted to.
Dr. Amir, the doctor in the white coat and blocky spectacles, awaits his answer by his stiff hospital bed and beeping monitors.
Curly hesitates for a moment. Then raises what remains of his arm, and points it to the bold ‘yes’ on the board.
Let them in.
What remains of Curly is found and rescued from the Tulpar. He has to come face to face with the families of his deceased crewmates. It doesn't go well, for the most part.

And maybe that’s why Jimmy has such mixed feelings towards her.
Her demeanour is so high and mighty like all the men Jimmy might recall from his life, and not just a stupid little girl who has no clue what she’s talking about. The Maxi pads stocked in the bathroom just for her, the way she bats her eyelashes so precociously at their captain with such apparent fuck-me eyes is proof enough of that.
Because-whether Jimmy likes it or not- Nurse Anya Musume is a paradox.
When the twinkling bright stars are just beyond your reach, grazing the very top of your fingertips, sometimes it's necessary to bring them down a notch or two down to earth via physical means.

You’ve come to realize that's an active decision he makes. Assuming that the hands guiding him forward will never push too hard. Thinking that if he follows, if he listens, if he steps where he is told, he will always be safe.
This devotion to authority is something that could get him killed one day. If you aren’t just saving his life, then you’re teaching Daisuke a valuable lesson; it’s dangerous to be so blindly trusting of others.

He could never be as soft as Yor, because that was something only reserved for her. Yet, everytime he thought of being his strict self, he put himself in the place of Anya who just lost two loving parents and now was trapped with this tyrannical lieutenant who could only help with her homework. So he tried to be something in between, with far more harshness than kindness. Because he never learned to truly be affectionate with her."
