Yanqing dies in Scalegorge Waterscape, despite Dan Heng's best attempts to save him. Jing Yuan manages to be there for his final moments, and goes through what every parent fears most.

when he looks at lu guang, cheng xiaoshi trails off because though he’s stopped pressing the topic, he knows that this is that distance between them.
or: sometimes lu guang seems lost in his own world and cheng xiaoshi will do anything to pull him back into this one.

Lu Guang had told him that all those people were already dead, and what he was seeing was just a small piece of the past. If Lu Guang was with him on this dive, he would probably say the same of himself. But he’s here, isn’t he? Cheng Xiaoshi can feel the warmth of his hand as he leads him upstairs, the softness of his lips as he kisses him. He hears the tenderness in his voice when he says Cheng Xiaoshi’s name. He sees the look of utter adoration in his eyes as he watches him. He’s real. And at this moment, he’s alive. If Cheng Xiaoshi wants to believe that’s true, just for a little while, what’s so wrong with that?

Summary
There was a lot Lu Guang was willing to do when it came to Cheng Xiaoshi. Even if it meant sacrificing himself and returning back to where he came from. He accepts the inevitable future that will come to pass and that he will disappear from their lives like thin air - much like the way he arrived.
Cheng Xiaoshi isn't going to let him go that easily.
