‘Huh.’ Scott heard himself say. For once in his existence, words failed him. Should he chastise, threaten, punish? No. No, he’d tried all these things, long ago, with other short-sighted fledglings, and it had changed nothing. Nothing. ‘There’s a side to you I wasn’t… expecting.’
The rest of the night passed in a haze. After that, he barely remembered who he’d spoken to, what he’d said, time racing past as if it too was desperate to get away from that stab of pain, more intense than any stake wound. Only the emotions Shelby had left him with lingered. Only the doubt he hadn’t felt in a millennium.
And then he was stood over a grave without a body, saying words no one would hear. And missing him. -

Summary
In the distance, the not quite familiar spikes of a palisade wall, built up again after being burned down almost 200 years ago, emerge on the edge of Shelby‘s vision.
Even from this far away, their eyes can make out every last scratch where the bark has been ripped off the stem. Every scar the axe that felled those trees has left behind.
The shadows of the torches dance across the wood, and even the darkness of the slowly dying night does not hinder their sight at all.
The massacre still lies in the air. Especially now, on its second anniversary.
A quiet, far away voice draws Shelby‘s attention in. It sounds just like Avid‘s.
OR Shelby, Scott and Drift visit Oakhurst again after 200 years, and Shelby hears a voice she thought she would never hear again

Shelby is angry.
She can’t help herself, but there’s no way to feel sympathy towards Pyro and Owen. They killed her fledgling. There’s no forgiveness for that.Drift is furious.
But she can’t show it in the castle, so she’s tearing down the ashy trees to try and calm herself. It’s not working.Scott is calm.
That’s what he shows on his face. But he’s fuming inside. Just because Apo had turned Sausage didn’t mean Avid had to die.
Maybe someone else did.
