He reopened his fisted hands, trying to let the tension slip away, and finally took a deep breath.
The whistling that had made him deaf until that moment slowly faded away, allowing Akaza to hear the silence of the house broken by a new, sudden and unexpected noise.
Akaza stiffened and his gaze immediately turned towards the fusuma that served as a closet in the room, and from which muffled cries were now audible.
He approached the sliding door and carefully opened it. A small pile of sheets moved under his gaze - now more curious than angry as a few moments before -, and finally a loud cry began to fill the room.

Because Akaza has been dead for a long time, and he started again as Hakuji.

Fire danced around Kyojuro as if he were the origin of every ember known to the universe. Deceptively gentle warmth could become a blazing inferno in seconds if anyone dared get too close, and Akaza warred between his self-preservation and the willingness to bear witness to his own destruction if only it meant getting closer to those flames.
Yes, Kyojuro Rengoku was the sun itself. And when he fought? Oh, then he became a supernova.

Kyojuro was never one to give up. Even after the fight at the Mugen Train left him down an eye and severely weakened, he picked up his sword and returned to missions as soon as he could escape Shinobu's care. Of course, Waxing Moon Three would hardly allow him to return to his previous life so easily.
The demon stuck to him like a persistent burr. The sunlight was his only solace, for no matter how far he traveled, the demon always caught up with him come nightfall. He wanted to hate him for it. In some ways, he did. But one could only spend so much time around another before they began to notice things.
Akaza was oddly helpful for a demon. Despite having ample opportunity to kill him, he seemed dead set on ensuring that Kyojuro survived battles that gave him far more difficulty than they once had.
Once he started to see the man within the demon, Kyojuro knew that he had gotten in far too deep, but there was nothing for it now. He would simply have to see where this path took them.

Summary
When the sun rose over the corpse of the Mugen Train, Akaza fled into the forest with the Flame Hashira hot on his heels.
Kyojuro had thought he'd lost the demon in the woods until he stumbled across his hiding spot. With little choice left to him, Akaza dragged the swordsmen into the cramped space of the animal burrow he was forced to shelter in.
With no space between them, and the slayer and demon both in season, it's only a matter of time before the tension snaps.

Summary
Akaza couldn’t remember the root of his hatred, why looking at swords set off such a fire in his chest and why he refused to kill women. He would get a pressure in his head, like a bubble threatening to burst and reveal his past to him, but he had no interest in who he was before. He was weak before, as lowly as all the men he ate. Being a demon was all he knew now, following orders and committing carnage in the pursuit of true strength. There were cons to such a lifestyle, namely being the man whose orders he had to follow, but there was nothing else left for him. Muzan worked in ultimatums, either you got the job done or got punished, demon slayers acting as a mercy compared to what the man would dish out.
Akaza is given an ultimatum, the first one that actively contradicts everything he stood for as both a demon and a man.
