ford can’t stop thinking about old yeller that night, staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars on their ceiling. he couldn’t do it, he thinks. he couldn’t ever shoot his own dog, no matter what.
“well,” stanley says pragmatically the next morning, pretending like he doesn’t care as much as ford knows he does, “since he was sufferin’ and all, it was really better for him to be dead, wasn’t it? not much point in being alive if your whole life is terrible and you’re a danger to everybody you ever loved.”
something cold and sharp takes up residence in ford’s stomach. he doesn’t like hearing stanley say stuff like that. he doesn’t like it at all.
“i wouldn’t do it,” ford insists. “no matter what, i wouldn’t. there’s always another way.”
“heh. yeah, i bet you’d find another way, brainiac,” stanley teases, reaching over to muss ford’s hair. ford swats him away. stanley can make fun all he wants—ford still spends all night thinking about cures for rabies.

You know Ford is an experienced outdoorsman and he’d probably be able to find his way around here blindfolded and hogtied. If you have to go out in risky weather with anyone, he's undoubtedly going to be your best bet.
With the stride of a uniquely confident man, Ford steps out into the evening air with a sharp breath inward and a contented sigh, taking in the awaiting scent of petrichor. He holds the door open for you with one hand and gestures for you to follow with the other, offering you a rakish grin.

He'd asked her in the casino hall if she wanted to do a line. He had more than enough to share and they were wasted out of their minds already. She'd cocked her head, thought about it and shrugged, saying 'eh, why the hell not'. But when they'd gone into the bathroom and he'd taken out his baggie, she laughed and stalled his hand. “What is this, kindergarten?” Taken out some weird purple powder he'd never seen anything like before.
Seemed like an abysmal idea to take it. She said it'd "rock his world".
So, they each snorted up a line.
Then Marilyn had set up one long one and coyly suggested they “Lady and the Tramp” it.
Stan thought he might be in love– she snorted and he realized he'd said it aloud. That’s when security had busted into the men’s room, Stan’s coke still out on the counter, powder all under their noses. They got kicked out and went to a bar and then it was a blur– him begging her to marry him, her again doing that head cock-shrug-”why not” combo. Elvis congratulating them. Both of them vomiting behind a dumpster.
