Summary
Desperate to escape a bad situation, George impulsively takes a last minute job serving as a fire lookout in the Montana wilderness. He's expecting nearly five months of complete solitude as he keeps watch for fires by day and tries to heal from his past by night. What he's not expecting is a chatty neighbor in another fire tower twenty miles away. Dream is an experienced ranger tasked with keeping an eye on the new guy, but as they talk day by day over the radio, getting to know and slowly trust one another, something new starts kindling beneath the surface. Will the spark between these two strangers die in the smoke, or will it turn into a full-blown fire? And what will happen when fire season is over and George has to go back to his normal life, full of troubles?

Dream has quite a few moles that decorate his skin in elaborate constellations, patterns up his arms and across his chest, from his back leading up to his neck. If the stories were true it must mean that Dream had been loved many times in many past lives.
Dream knew that it was a bunch of bullshit.

He’s thinking of Dream when he pushes his bedroom door open and reflexively flicks the light switch on, so his first thought, when an oddly hiss-like sound comes from his bed, isn’t of one of the three cats that roam the house like lions on the savannah.
“Dream?” he says, immediately feeling ridiculous. Why would Dream be in his room without him?
“George,” Dream’s voice says back, heavy with sleep. “Can you turn the light off?”
Without hesitating, George flips the switch back down. Dream makes a contented noise, and there’s a rustling of blankets as he settles back in.

But their tryst is just for the duration of filming, and it has to be kept secret from the people in charge. As the weeks of filming turn into months and feelings between the two grow, they have to decide if the relationship forming between them is worth sacrificing everything for--including their careers.

“You’re still fidgeting,” George points out sometime later, poking Dream’s shoulder with his finger.
“I know.”
George frowns, considering the problem for a total of three seconds before he plucks Dream’s hand and places it on his lap, enveloping Dream’s palm with two of his own. “There, fixed it. You’re welcome.”
Dream is a bit too stunned to answer, but it does help him settle down. George looks smug every time a commoner looks their way, way too pleased with himself. Once they’re free to go, George laughs and calls himself a genius and bullies a promise out of Dream to bring him in next time his father holds Court, too.
Somehow, the hand-holding becomes a thing. Dream quite likes it, but he never tells George that.

He remembers sunny days spent on the same shore he walks on a daily basis now, the twinge of sunburn on his arms not that different from back then, only now he doesn't have his mother's voice calling out to him to come back under the shade. He stuffs his pockets with seashells and weird rocks. There's sand under his fingernails and spread all over his back porch, a pinkness over the planes of his face that brings out the freckles under his eyes.
But - above all, he keeps his eyes peeled on the horizon. It's childish, but he remembers meeting a boy by the beach all those years ago, and every snapped branch or stronger wave that crashes over the shore makes him perk up, smiling despite himself. For all the friendships he has found in this sleepy little town, there's no one to quite match his fondness for the water, and he thinks he could use some company on his walks, much like he did back then.
The ocean calls for him. Slowly, George starts to bring it home.
