"I think you better start breathin' before I make you," Wax said, gently working Wayne's hands free, one finger at a time. It was an old, stupid joke, worn soft by the years, by the countless nights in the Roughs just like this one. Wayne falling apart, and Wax gluing him back together.

Geralt and Yenenfer are at the Conclave of mages and won't come looking for them until dawn. Ambushed on their way to the cabin in Loxia, Jaskier is badly injured. Scared and alone, Ciri tries her best to save his life.

“Hey!” she shouted as she yanked his shirt out of the way to get to his side more easily. He opened his eyes again, but it took a moment for them to focus on her. “Don’t fall asleep now.”
It was hard to tell exactly what she was looking at. His entire stomach was covered in blood, obscuring the wound in the dim moonlight. Wasting no more time, she pressed down as hard as she could with the gauze in a desperate attempt to stop him from bleeding out.
Jaskier screamed, one hand grabbing her wrist weakly, a plea to make the pain stop. It didn’t last long as he had to gasp for breath, the noise turning to strangled whimpers that were almost worse. The gauze quickly became saturated, so she had to shift to grab more. This time he didn’t make a sound.

Summary
Jaskier knew there was no point in him being in Kaer Morhen. Geralt had needed information when he'd found him in Oxenfurt, not Jaskier himself, and once he had what he needed he'd been discarded and forgotten. So now, here Jaskier was, in a remote witcher keep with no purpose, feeling out of place and useless. Well, the least he could do was try to help out where he could.
Except no matter how hard he tries, it keeps backfiring.

Lamb’s irritated expression shifts slightly, his forehead creasing in the middle. Then his eyes flick downward, then back up again, eyes slightly narrowed in suspicion. “Are you hit?”
"What?" Louisa says sharply.
River looks down to where his hand is clasping his hip. He hadn't even noticed he was doing that...He lifts his hand away from his side enough to catch a glimpse of bright red before quickly replacing it, swallowing hard to quell the nausea that tries to rise up.
“Yup. Yeah, I--I think so. Yeah."

"A perplexed look joined the hurt, anger, and confusion on his face. “What does that have to do with anything?” He demanded. His words still hurt, but it was obvious that the bite in them was a mask for how he was really feeling.
“I - I tried to heal you, but ... it - you weren’t injured - you didn’t bump your head. It wasn’t physical damage, it was...” Katara paused, incredibly uncomfortable. “... It was your memories. All your worst memories.” She paused again. “And I ... I saw them.”
Zuko could feel flames itching to escape from his palms. His fire was always strongest when he was emotional, and the news that Katara, his former enemy, and someone who he was desperately trying to earn the trust of, had witnessed all of his weakest, most damaging, traumatic moments - had seen him at his most vulnerable, most shameful, was an emotional slap in the face. He was thankful that his wrists were tied.
Instead of fire, he channeled his anger into a loud, biting, “WHAT?!” He tasted smoke in his mouth. A little fire did escape after all."
Katara thinks Zuko has a head injury and tries to heal him. In doing so, she has access to all of Zuko’s memories, and they aren’t happy.Bookmarked by Handl3

Oh. That explains a lot. Zuko can’t do anything but choke in response.
Thankfully, the Water Tribe boy isn’t looking for a response. “Not even four hours ago, Katara was the only thing keeping you from bleeding out on the pier. You’re probably just minutes away from being back where you were then.” He accentuates his point by gently applying more pressure to Zuko’s injury. Fucking ow. “You need them. If you want to stay alive, you don’t try anything. Okay?”
Shit.

When his ship explodes, Zuko isn't so lucky to get away unscathed. No amount of firebending can protect him from the solid steel the explosion launches everywhere. His ship is lodged in his chest, and he can't breathe. He must rely on the Avatar to do it for him.
