Summary
If it hadn't been a full day, and if it hadn't started with Knuckles getting blasted, Sonic would almost think he was just meditating. The echidna sits with folded legs, eyes closed, chest rising and falling. It doesn't look like anything is wrong.
Sonic folds his arms. Looks can be deceiving.
"So?" Voice soft, Tails watches over the so-called-Oracle's shoulder. Green magic twines around the alligator's hand, twisting between Knuckles' quills. "Do you know what's wrong?"
"He is trapped within his troubled mind," the Oracle breathes. His hands retreat back into his cloak. His glowing eyes pierce through the shadow of his hood. "You must enter his memories and discover that which he is locked within."
"We have to go into Knuckles' brain?" Sonic gasps, leaning forward. "How?!"
"I will send you."

“We did other things, too.” Knuckles muttered, still remaining stiff. She was a child, yes, but he’d been first thrown into an arena when he was barely her age, and he was still alive because he knew how to fight. He wasn’t going to make his enemies’ mistake of underestimating a child.
“Okay.” she said. “You know the hour where they let us out into the garden? Meet me by the porch, I’ll show you our way out.”

Summary
The calamity which resulted in the extinction of the Echidna was never something that Knuckles went into detail about. In all honesty, no one really knew what had taken place. It was simply a gradual decline, a once powerful race being reduced to a single remaining Guardian on a floating island, with a duty he had been born into.
It took a single question from Tails, on an entirely normal, if interesting night star-gazing on Angel Island to bring up how the two timelines didn't make sense.
Since if the Echidna were wiped out over two-millennia beforehand, how was Knuckles only a couple of years older than Sonic?

“About the whole…” Tom lowered his voice and stooped, which only succeeded in drawing more attention to him. “Longclaw was… killed by echidnas?”
There was a long moment where they all just looked at one another. Tails looked confused. Sonic looked a mix of distressed and guilty. Tom and Maddie looked like they were expecting shock. Finding none, Tom’s face shifted to outrage. “Wait, you knew?!”

The alien blinked hard and opened his eyes wide once more.
There was an explosion and suddenly Maddie was flat on her ass. The alien shot past her like a bullet. He hit the ground and skidded across the floor before he lost his balance. He threw out his arms to catch himself, except he only had the one now. He yelped as he toppled over and fell right onto its injured arm.
They all gasped. Before Maddie could think of how much that would hurt, the alien shrieked.

“Sonic–” Longclaw made to grab her charge, but he vanished from her side.
“Don’t hurt her!” In a blur, Sonic was in front of the echidna, arms spread out.
“Sonic, no!" Panic struck her. It was happening again! She couldn’t allow this echidna to harm her or Sonic!
