“Say,” he begins, “I couldn’t help but notice you had on a general jersey tonight. I’m surprised you weren’t repping Simeon’s number.”
“And have more rumors about our relationship spread? I don’t think so. Simeon hates when people think we’re dating, which happened for a bit with the CC Chols. Says it gets in his way when he’s trying to find a date.”
“In that case, how about I send you one of mine?” he offers, and you blink up at him.
“A jersey?”
“Yeah, how about it? You could wear the ‘C’ off of the ice.” His dark eyes are even more shadowed and immensely alluring.
“I suppose that’d be okay,” you agree nonchalantly, though your heart is pounding in your chest. You can’t believe the captain of the Devildom Dogs is flirting with you!

Following your childhood best friend across the country after his trade to the Devildom Dogs—one of the most prolific AHL Hockey teams in the business—hadn't been the plan, but you can't say you're not liking it. He learns— through the merry lips of people celebrating— that he’s opened two homeless shelters, three food banks, two clothing charities, and a tutoring center, for school-aged children.
All done through the "hard work" of his "assistant" who's, as they say, "working on Leona's behalf". One woman, dressed in makeup way too dark for the desert they all live in, whispers, "He even gives out money, if you ask. Is it your money?"

You want to rest. One way or another, you are tired, in a bone-deep, hollowed out fashion that a night’s rest cannot fix. You are spent, wrung out, and pressured for more. You aren’t allowed to stop, aren’t allowed to relax, you need to keep working for your food and your place here and your chance at home.
You cannot die, you know that, on a logical level. Can’t let all the work you’ve put into just being here go to waste. But sometimes, you forget. Forget that you’re supposed to stay alive, for everyone else’s sake. And you don’t move out of the way quick enough.
