There, across the cafe, is his favorite detective. The only one who always knows just how to catch Kokichi off guard, even now.
He does look the same on the outside: dark wind-blown hair, elegant gray coat, sharp eyes that spot Kokichi immediately from where he stands in the doorway. He weaves hastily between the people crowding by the entrance, muttering polite apologies to everyone he bumps, as if there isn't someone much more deserving of one right in his line of sight.
Actually, that was a lie. Shuichi doesn't look the same at all—he's absolutely radiant even though he's out of breath, his smile a sunbeam as he approaches Kokichi's table by the window. Kokichi sits there and stares a little, because even after all this time, the idea that Shuichi is arriving here precisely for him still sends a thrill through him—an old, old emotion that he has no right to anymore, but still. He's not a thief for nothing.
Shuichi gets to the table and rests a hand on the back of the empty chair. "Hello," he says.
Kokichi opens his mouth. Closes it again. Bites the inside of his cheek as his heart remembers what it's like to be alive. "Hey," he says, perfectly casual.

Kokichi was always alone; from when he was just 5 years of age. Their parents were.. Practically non-existent, and even the children around his neighborhood called him weird for being so…. hyper? The only thing that kept them company was his favorite television show, Detective Red. He was more interested in the villain than the actual main character though; They related more with them. At one point of time, He had watched the entirety of the show. The series had already ended so it made him rewatch it a whole lot. They had already memorized each and every line of the show, and began unconsciously using them in his day to day life. A line from the show really stuck with him though; more specifically, a line from his favorite character - ‘ Everyone hates me, so I will play the role of the villain. And I won’t be a boring one at that, detective.

“I don’t think Ouma-kun is someone who doesn’t want help, he’s just someone who has difficulty asking for it directly… so lying outright to Amami-kun to get him to back off is a bit out of character.”
There’s a pause after Shuichi finishes speaking wherein Kaito and Rantaro exchange an indecipherable look. When they look back at Shuichi, they’re both smiling, Rantaro’s eyes crinkled with fondness.
“Hey, Saihara-kun,” Rantaro prompts. “Why don’t you go check on Ouma-kun?”
“A-Ah? Me?” Shuichi can feel his neck warming for reasons he can’t put into words. “Why?”
“I just think you’d be the right person for it.” Rantaro adjusts the bangles on his wrist, still with that peaceful, unreadable smile on his face.
Kaito, in turn, claps Shuichi’s shoulder. “If you think something’s up, you should pursue it to the end, right? Let us know what’s going on later. It’s pretty weird for the dude to miss class.”

Shuichi pressed his lips against Kaito's skin—a silent apology for missing so much time beside him—fluttering his face with kisses beginning from his forehead, down to his cheeks and onto his nose before placing a chaste kiss onto his lips. Kaito’s lips were chapped, he noted. Later today, he devised a plan to sneakily apply lip balm by kissing him.
A ghost of a smile played on Kaito's lips, and before Shuichi could react, arms wrapped around his middle and plopped him on top of Kaito. Among one eye cracked open, his lips curled into a small grin—a private one reserved for him—effectively shutting his brain up and replacing it with the gentle buzz of adoration.
