    What Erik finds is a Concord cracking apart: Whitehall compromised, the Courts circling, conspirators already feeding on London. Charles, for the first time, sees how fragile his lifework truly is - and how much they may lose if they fail.

    London is bleeding. Peace was never an option. But perhaps something better might be.

    The words were neither rejection nor acceptance.

    Erik met his gaze for a long moment, eyes rimmed red and glassy, as if he hadn't slept since Cuba. Since he left Charles bleeding on a distant shore, their newly formed family fractured.

    "I have no other haven," Erik said, voice hoarse, stripped of its former steel. He clutched his hat tightly, fingers trembling. "I thought I did, but that belief was nothing but a cruel illusion."
