“I don’t know. But we have to hope so,” Luz admitted. She almost felt dirty saying it, because where there had always been hope inside her, lay a deep, cold pit.

The blinding light of the post-eclipse apocalypse had vanished. Gone were the isles, the Collector, Luz’s little brother, and the world she tried so desperately to save all in one instant. A dark and vacant wooden room glared back at her.
It wasn’t over. It couldn’t be over. Going back was the only option.
She opened the door. Closed it. Opened it again.
The same empty space laughed back in her face with its silence. She had no magic. No key, No door, No Phillip journal, Nothing.
She turned around. Three witches and a grimwalker, tired, bruised, and strewn upon the muddy grass, looked to her. What they were looking for, she didn’t know. For guidance, reassurance, a reaction, something. She could manage no words to say. Cold rain filled the space where a heartening speech or a plan of action should’ve been.
They lost.
She lost.
The emperor was defeated, the Day of Unity stopped, and somehow she was still here, thrown and sealed out of the only world she’d ever loved.
